Today, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and joy as I share that I have officially earned my Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and can proudly say I am Dr. Mary Lou Palmer.

This journey is so much bigger than me. I am the daughter of an immigrant family with Spanish as my first language. As one of eight children, I was raised in a low-income community in East Chicago, an environment that shaped my strength, resilience, and determination. The odds were not always in my favor, but through faith, perseverance, and purpose, I kept going. Today is a testament that where you come from does not determine where you can go.

As a Hispanic woman, this moment carries even deeper meaning. Statistics show that Latinas make up less than 2% of doctorate degree holders in the United States, but statistics can’t stop a girl with God and ambition! To be part of that percentage is something I do not take lightly.

I would first like to thank God for guiding every step of this journey and giving me the strength to keep pushing forward, even when it felt impossible.

To my husband, my inspiration (the first doctor in our household), thank you for stepping up in every way for our family, for your unwavering support, and for carrying so much so I could chase this dream. I could not have done this without you!

To my children, thank you for your patience and understanding when mommy had to study, write, and stay focused. You are my greatest motivation and my “why.”

To my mentors and faculty advisor, thank you for your guidance and belief in me throughout this journey. Your support has been invaluable.

To my family and friends, thank you for uplifting me, encouraging me, and never letting me give up.

I am so incredibly grateful! I hope this moment inspires others, especially those who come from humble beginnings, to believe that anything is possible.

I have a big heart, I love hard, and I happily celebrate others. Today, though, thank you so much for celebrating me and pouring so much love into me. And shout out to God for the 50 degree weather in December today! I was able to have my legs out😂 My heart is full🫶🏽
