Please join me for the opening reception of the exhibition I curated at The Norman Shannon and Emmy Lou P. Illges Gallery at Columbus State University, “About America: Liberty, Legacy, and Loyalty at 250”
October 6 - November 28, 2026
Curated by Cynthia Nourse Thompson
Opening Reception: Thursday, October 8, 5:00pm - 7:00pm

Artists include: Ansel Adams, Shelia Pree Bright, Bethany Collins, Victoria Dugger, Jeffrey Gibson, Jenny Holzer, Jasper Johns, Pirkle Jones, Robert Longo, Robert Mapplethorpe, Reynier Leyva Novo, RaMell Ross, Yuko Shimizu, Stephanie Syjuco, Hank Willis Thomas, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, and Fred Wilson.

This exhibition explores the complexities of representation, memory, history, and the construction of American Nationhood. While this exhibition commemorates the United States’ semi quincentennial, it also provides an opportunity for thoughtful reflection and reminds us of our shared humanity—even during periods of civic adversity.

In this photograph, Rev. Wheeler Parker Jr. holds a finished copy of “If Emmett Till Lived” for the first time, captured by photographer and cousin of Emmett Till, Lance Omar Thurman @lanceomar.

Published by @delmonico_books and @mocpchi, distributed by @artbook, and designed by @mikomcginty, “If Emmett Till Lived: A Creative Monument” offers a photographic reimagining of Emmett Till’s life had it not been cut short.

Bringing together nearly 200 photographs and contributions from civic and cultural leaders such as Lonnie G. Bunch III, Sherrilyn Ifill, and Paul M. Farber, as well as Ava DuVernay, John Legend, Rep. Ayanna Pressley, and Amy Sherald, the book imagines the life Till might have lived had he returned home in 1955, rather than being murdered at the age of 14 while visiting family in Mississippi, a victim of the racial terror of Jim Crow rule.

4.4 - Nickel Boys: Brutally Real, Beautifully Shot and Impossible to Forget

So… we may have spent the first 9 minutes talking about absolutely everything except this week’s film. Consider it the chatty intro you didn’t know you needed.
Eventually, we make our way to Nickel Boys (2024), RaMell Ross’s haunting and visually groundbreaking adaptation of Colson Whitehead’s novel, inspired by the devastating true history of Florida’s Dozier School for Boys.
Through Elwood and Turner, we’re pulled into a world where a place meant to educate and protect instead becomes a site of unimaginable cruelty. Ross’s intimate, unconventional cinematography makes this film feel less like something you’re watching and more like something you’re experiencing. This one stayed with us long after the credits, and we’re diving into exactly why.

Two boys find each other in a place designed to erase them.

Adapted from Colson Whitehead’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, RaMell Ross’s NICKEL BOYS is a formally daring portrait of friendship and survival in Jim Crow-era Florida.
