Earlier this year, it was our privilege to honour Wangechi Mutu, one of the most esteemed and essential African artists working today, with the Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Award for Artistic Excellence.

Mutu sees art as an “ancient language older than text,” that may have originated in Africa but is capable of envisioning the future of the entire world. The artist is also a founding member of the Zeitz MOCAA Global Council. Mutu’s recent sculptures, gaining renown worldwide, make tangible the supernatural forms of deities.

That same evening, Zeitz MOCAA also honoured Louis Norval, founder of the Norval Foundation. Receiving the Zeitz MOCAA Honorary Award for Philanthropic Achievement highlights Norval’s unwavering commitment to excellence and the betterment of society, as Norval continues to shape the landscape in business and culture.

Zeitz MOCAA was also proud to host a Live & Virtual auction on the night of the annual Gala. Together with Strauss & Co., we raised funds to sustain both our Curatorial and Education programming.

A special and sincere thank-you to the Strauss & Co team and to Bina Genovese for leading the auction, and to the evening’s bidders and winners.

Find a film reflecting on the evening’s events at the link in our bio.

EXHIBITION EXTENSION

Zeitz MOCAA is pleased to announce the extension of 𝙎𝙚𝙡𝙛 𝙖𝙨 𝙖 𝙁𝙤𝙧𝙜𝙤𝙩𝙩𝙚𝙣 𝙈𝙤𝙣𝙪𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩, Mame-Diarra Niang’s first museum solo exhibition, until 18 August 2024.

Organised as a survey of the artist’s practice over the past decade, the project brings together significant bodies of work in dialogue in a spatial choreography.

Niang’s prolific practice is characterised by an exploratory, abstract and subversive approach to lens-based media working across photography, moving image and immersive audio-visual installation.

We would like to extend our gratitude to the artist and their gallery representation; Stevenson Cape Town, Johannesburg and Amsterdam; for support in the realisation of the exhibition.

Zeitz MOCAA’s curatorial and educational programming is generously supported by GUCCI and the Mellon Foundation.

Happy International Women’s day! 🎥🐩

Wouldn’t be half the woman I am if I didn’t have other women reaching out and holding my hand in various areas of my life 💕

May we plant positive seeds in each other’s lives.

There is absolutely no need for comparison if you are comfortable with your journey and your life.

Declare to the universe what you want and be absolutely intentional about making sure it comes to pass. Because I can guarantee you, it will.

To more positive, authentic, good spirited and praying women 🫶🏻
