The Play Principle is BACK!

The Play Principle is an experiential research seminar on play as a spiritual practice and as a form of attention activism that happens quarterly at @fabriksocialspaces. Meaning: A space to do weird and whimsical stuff and reflect on what it has to teach us about being human together.

Last quarter we shared our deepest secrets in a made up language; read what various smart people have had to say about play, spirituality, and attention before transforming ourselves into three-headed professors delivering a lecture on the same; and walked through a museum of paper ephemera from past That’s Interesting! parties before creating and sharing a riff of our own (see last slide).

This month the inimitable @ramimargron is our guest co-facilitator, bringing a lifetime’s worth of circle and improv and theatre games to the table. Ever yearned to be part of the most kickass theatre class imaginable? And curious to reflect with others on how the imaginative arts shape us? This is the space for you.

Grab your spot on Luma!

Images from The Table, which premiered last month at Judson Memorial Church, NYC
Presented by @pinkfangnyc, a company rooted in the artistic legacy of Ping Chong.

The following is adapted from my program note:

Creating this piece in collaboration with Mei Ann Teo and this creative team has been a genuine liberation - - the chance to step into a lineage that holds community, history, the urgency of the unheard, and something harder to name: a commitment to image that precedes argument, to sensation that arrives before meaning, to mystery held open rather than resolved.

To work in the legacy of Ping Chong is to remember that maybe the artist’s role is broader and stranger than the moment often asks for. Do we live in a time that wants art to justify itself through legibility? To carry a message, to resolve. Ping’s legacy insists otherwise: that an image can do what an argument cannot, that work can be porous and willing to carry what it cannot explain.

The Table is made in that spirit. It doesn’t ask you to arrive at a conclusion. It asks you to let your body know something before your mind does.

In a world desperate to make sense of itself, we believe there is profound value in work that doesn’t. Not because we are indifferent to the world, but because we trust that what is felt before it is understood reaches somewhere deeper, and stays longer.

The Table
By Mei Ann Teo and Erika Chong Shuch,
created in collaboration with the cast and creative team.

Cast: Ching Valdes-Aran, maura nguyễn donohue, Julia Gu, Rami Margron, Shannon Yu

Creative Team: Tomi Tsunoda (dramaturg), Peiyi Wong (set/costume), Tuce Yasak (lighting), Justin Hicks (sound), Hao Bai (projection)

Daniel Allen Nelson (PSM), Adrienne Swan (PM), Vivian Yining Cao (line producer)

Only six more chances to catch The Table!

We opened The Table last weekend—the culmination of a process that started with the experience of a meal ritual and a meditation on insatiability, grief, and the body in systems. Two years later, as part of our inaugural year as Pink Fang, we’re thrilled to share this work with audiences.

Our newest production is by @teo.meiann and @erkachong, with choreography by Erika. Our brilliant performers are @ramimargron @chingvaldes @shihuiy @mauranguyendonohue @hsiangru.yu. The genius creative team includes set and costume design by @peiyiamelia, lighting design by Tuçe Yasak, projection design by @haobai523, sound design by @justinhicksmusic, dramaturgy by @tomi.tsunoda, stage management by Daniel Allen Nelson, production management by @adrienne.v.swan, and line producing by @viviancaoyn.
