This garment is very dear to me because it is not merely a beautiful piece of clothing; it is a garment that carries a story within it. The idea for this design was born during one of the most difficult periods of my life, when a series of earthquakes in Herat kept the city in fear and sorrow for weeks. During those days, many people were injured, and hearing the news about damage to Herat’s historic monuments—such as the minarets and the Citadel of Ikhtiyaruddin—deeply affected me. In my mind, a scene began to form: I imagined a turquoise or lapis-blue tile breaking loose from the top of one of Herat’s minarets and falling to the ground. In my imagination, I picked up that tile and placed it at the heart of this garment, as if a fragment of Herat’s history and spirit had been preserved within this piece. In choosing the colors of the garment, I tried to create a palette that moves between fire and ash—colors that evoke destruction while also suggesting rebirth. The black square at the center of the garment symbolizes that very tile: a tile that no longer rests in its original place, yet still carries memory and identity. The two wing-like forms on either side of the garment are inspired by the wings of the phoenix. For this reason, I named the piece “Phoenix.” For me, this work represents the belief that the immense artistic, historical, and spiritual heritage of Afghanistan can never truly disappear. Just as the phoenix is reborn from ashes, even the smallest fragments of this heritage can continue to revive and preserve the greatness and identity of this land.
