My favorite films of 2023.

There’s a few that could’ve been on here but they are not currently accessible.
This year was very interesting. Audiences basically said “meh” to mediocre superhero films. Big franchises also suffered big box office drops.

Meanwhile we had the return of some of best filmmakers making adult films. This summer also had one most fun pop culture moments ever with “Barbenheimer”.
A lot of movies were pushed due to the strikes but overall think this year was full of surprises and many special films.

Nightcrawler (2014) is an underrated gem. I truly believe Jake Gyllenhaal deserved an Oscar nomination. Unfortunately that year was stacked with other great performances.
He plays a sociopath that finds his calling recording violent events late at night in Los Angeles and selling the footage to a local television news station.
It’s a commentary on consumerism, shock culture, and the erosion of privacy.
Jake Gyllenhaal’s character starts of as an antihero and you slowly see his haunting descent into a villain devoid of emotions for others close to him.
It’s expertly photographed, has a fantastic cast and brilliant script. One of the best psychological thrillers ever made.

“Drive” 2011, Directed by Nicolas Winding Refn is a modern masterpiece. It feels like a precursor of the @a24 era of auteur driven films.
Refn came out of the gate with a unique and fearless style. Every single aspect of this movie contributes to the unique style of storytelling. The soundtrack and electronic score give this film a very nostalgic 80’s feeling, while being set in modern day. It makes it feel timeless, taking place in a period frozen in time where The Driver exists.
The whole film is very minimal in dialogue. This makes the visual storytelling the most important and it delivers in drawing you into this world. Many filmmakers have shot in Los Angeles but it has never looked this beautiful.
There is a softness in Ryan Gosling’s character that is very endearing. He yearns for a normal life, however he has a dark past that is slowly hinted at. He is simply one of the coolest characters ever put on screen.
Drive will forever hold a special place. It’s a love story, a violent thriller, and a retro throwback.
