From 2008 jumping to 2026, Sundance Film Fest, what a role you’ve played in my life. All the friends, creative minds and storytellers you’ve brought together… this was such a nostalgic trip, the final Park City Sundance. It was so special sharing it with my new Elon University friends and all the wonderful people here celebrating the importance of cinema in our life.

Reconsider a workshop with the amazing Dr khalid Ghattas. We reconsidered our pasts, our futures, our problems, our decisions, ourselves, our stories, and purposes. An unforgettable experience full of thoughts and feelings that reset my mindset and mentality.

Captain Abu Raed (2007)

Stories change lives and Captain Abu Raed is one among them written about the power of storytelling. This is cinematic poetry on friendship and courage among generations.

Our hero is airport janitor Abu Raed, a lonely man with a big heart and small pockets who comes across a captain’s hat and for the local kids he becomes a Captain who travels across seas and watches the world from above the clouds.
Murad is a young boy who grew up too soon and then we have Nour, an ambitious and successful pilot often taunted for her singlehood.

Director Amin Matalqa has crafted a tale on human connection that binds this world and how attachments and sacrifices come with no age and class. With moments of humour and more melodrama, the film is a low-key social critique too. By the end, we do realise, Abu Raed was indeed a Captain, the one we all want in our lives.

For everyone who loves a little drama, picturesque locations, a bunch of talented kids and tender expressions of human life.

Genre: Drama
Director: Amin Matalqa
Artists: Nadim Sawalha, Hussein Al-Sous, Rana Sultan
Running time: 1h 42m
Where to watch: YouTube, Netflix
