Before, Hazel joined her school's theatre group. Now, it's like the play never happened. No one talks about it. How strange it was, until she and the others end up on an extra credit camping trip. Trapped with someone---something---after them.
A DARKER ACT is a YA horror story, but it's also the story of love, friendship, and pain. And of course, it is the story of supernatural curses.
Goldsmith is one of those authors that you can expect eerie, atmospheric, and utterly creepy vibes from. A DARKER ACT is no exception. This book is wild. That's the only way to describe the curse that is at this book's core. It was locked-room -esque, which I'm always a fan of.. With the curse and what they woke up, this is heart-poundingly good and kind of strange.
Onto something I wasn't a fan of. I am all for Goldsmith including Act II, which tells what happened before they found themselves in the woods, but I do feel like it came at an odd moment. Because the entire "flashback" was placed in the middle of all the high-stakes action of present day, it sort of softened (maybe not the best word) the pace. I feel like that sounds rude, and I apologize because I loved this book. I just wish the flashback had been spread out across the entire thing.
Once Act III starts, the book is back to it's high-stakes self, leading to an emotionally-devasting, yet satisfying, ending.

National Public Radio interviewed me about dear departed Margaret Hamilton, the barrier-breaking computer scientist who helped put astronauts on the moon. I discussed my work with Margaret on my picture book “Margaret and the Moon: How Margaret Hamilton Saved the First Lunar Landing”—a collaboration that was a life highlight for me.

It’s sad to say goodbye to Margaret Hamilton, the pioneering computer scientist who surmounted every obstacle to put astronauts on the moon. I was lucky to get to know her during interviews for my children’s book “Margaret and the Moon: How Margaret Hamilton Saved the First Lunar Landing.” She recalled a childhood devoted to solving problems, a skill set she developed as director of software engineering for NASA’s Apollo missions. Her ingenious coding prevented last-minute disaster during Apollo 11’s lunar landing, an achievement that earned her widespread recognition only late in life. Now, you can find her LEGO likeness in the “Women of NASA” set, along with other heroines who broke down barriers. Rest in peace, Margaret.

THE POOLS by E. Lockhart (October 6, 2026)

Lexie and her family moves to a new town known for its hot springs. There she meets Chester and sparks fly. On a cold morning, however, 5 people (Chester included) swim in the hot springs, and something happens that sends shockwaves through the town.
THE POOLS is a YA romance that bridges the line between reality and something otherworldly. This particular novel is different than Lockhart's previous books, but it has the same pull of knowing that some kind of twist awaits. The premise actually alludes to something go awry, but that twist was an odd one Unbelievable, yet sad. Because this is written in an in-verse style, it is a very quick read. Like a few hours max, which was a plus.

Call all Parents, Teachers and Librarians of Middle Grade readers who are looking for a great spooky season read. I absolutely LOVED The Creeps by Tehlor Majia. It’s a great entry into the horror genre while keeping very appropriate fo the age range.

What I especially liked was not only the creepy vibes but the found family and how they all worked together.

I was so fortunate to not only get gifted the finished copy from @randomhousekids but also audiobook from @prhaudio which made for an awesome immersion read.

Narrator @giordandiaz did such an amazing job with the prose. He sounded so age appropriate with inviting vocals, plus is pacing for the 1x speed was spot on. The whole production was really wonderful.

This comes out this Tuesday October 6th and I can’t wait to buy some copies to give to my favorite middle grade readers.

I finished Rob Buyea’s BECAUSE OF A STUDENT TEACHER on the bus ride home from fifth grade camp. Between camp and this book, I am feeling so hopeful about kids, and schools, and teachers. A great reminder about the magic that can be found in a classroom. I cried a lot the last 40 pages. A lot.
