During a recent preview screening of Gangland, Lou Diamond Phillips shared these thoughts about the score during the Q&A.

As a composer, hearing someone recognize what you’re trying to accomplish - music that serves the film rather than calling attention to itself - is incredibly rewarding.

He also described it as ‘Insidious’ which is exactly what Vince and I were going for. A feeling of relentless threat that’s just under the surface that could kick off at any time. There are several ethereal moments, but even in those moments, there is a weight and an unease.

Here’s another piece from the feature film ‘Bang Bang’.

This was so fun to record and orchestrate. I had never recorded an operatic singer before, and Caroline’s voice absolutely blew me away. Incredible!

@opticalrailroad has a genius ear for placing music in films and what he wants from a scene. This piece fits so well over the scene. It starts with Kevin Corrigan’s character singing the song and merges into this full orchestral, operatic piece.

This is my cover version of ‘My Lord and Master’ by Rodgers & Hammerstein.

Just thinking back to me as a 17-year-old mod in a band playing covers of songs I loved, I’d love to imagine my face if he could see me now covering this!

I hope you enjoy! (Now available on Spotify)

Over the past 4 years I’ve been so lucky to have recorded so much music for some amazing feature films. I can’t wait for you to see ‘Bang Bang’ and ‘Keep Quiet’, both directed by the amazing Vincent Grashaw @opticalrailroad

Here is a piece of score I wrote for the final scene of ‘Bang Bang’. Watching and hearing it at the Tribeca Film Festival last year was absolutely incredible, especially seeing the audiences reaction.

Tribeca Film Festival Review: “The A-Frame.”

According to a March 2024 report, the leading cause of death for Americans in 2022 (the most recent year with full data) was all types of heart disease with cancers in second place. Advancements in early detection and treatment of cancers today are lightyears ahead of where they were even 20 years ago, resulting in a diagnosis not being the potential death sentence it once was. That said, it doesn’t mean that there aren’t concerns, consequences, or adaptions that need to be made once in remission. Science being science, work in one area can sometimes lead to discoveries in others, like when the AI system BakeryScan was developed to help track and predict purchase patterns and inventory needs in bakeries in Japan and the shapes of some of the pastries programmed were very similar to the shapes of some cancers, resulting in the development of a system that could more quickly and more accurately identify whether a cell was cancerous than existing techniques. This is a corner stone element writer/director Calvin Lee Reeder (“The Field Guide to Evil;” “The Rambler”) borrows for his latest project, the horror thriller “The A-Frame,” having its world premiere during Tribeca Film Festival 2024. A blend of David Cronenberg (“The Fly”) and John Carpenter (“The Thing”), “The A-Frame” is a twisty, silly, goopy, sci-fi ride whose vibe implies deep quantum consequences which it doesn’t entirely deliver on.

Screened during Tribeca Film Festival 2024.

Click the bio link for the complete spoiler-free review.

Final Score: 3.5 out of 5.
