Lessons learned:

Thanks @randy_holton for the suggestion to share what I learned.

Yrsterdau I practiced a capsize drill, and I came away with a few important lessons.

First: you have to practice before the problems come. When you're upside down in cold water is not the time to figure out what to do. An ounce of preparation really is worth a pound of cure.

Second: wool is amazing. Even soaked through, it kept me surprisingly warm. There's a reason sailors have trusted wool for generations.

Third: I have a lot to learn. The Mississippi expedition is only two months away, and every practice session reminds me how much there is still to master before August.

That's exactly why I'm doing these drills now. Every mistake made in training is one less mistake to make when it counts.

I'd love your help. What skills, drills, or scenarios do you think I should practice before setting out on the Mississippi? Navigation? Emergency repairs? River rescue? Camping in storms? Leave your suggestions in the comments—I'm trying to learn as much as I can before launch day.

🍀St Paddy's Potluck... A few lucky faces from the potluck last evening. It was a beautiful (almost) Spring evening as about 40 community members gathered to share some excellent Irish themed and green food. As a special treat, multi-talented musician Cliff Banjovi provided live music on fiddle, banjo and didgeridoo!
Thanks to everyone who participated! And if you missed it, catch the next potluck on April 20th. Always the 3rd Thursday of the month at 6 pm. Hope you can make it!

A couple of days ago we stopped at Home Depot in Charleston and set up camp for the night. We woke up the next day and Sam met Randy. 😇Randy invited us to stay on his property and said him and his wife Damien were campers themselves. I can’t even put into words how thankful I am that we met them and decided to stay at their home. Staying at a complete strangers home definitely wasn’t on our list of things we planned on doing but, boy, it probably was the best decision we made so far. Randy and Damien are the good in the world. They are kind, lovely, caring, beautiful souls and we are forever changed meeting them. ❤️
