A piece we hold very close to our hearts, the music and poetry is hauntingly beautiful, we often like to close or open shows with this. Originally written for guitar, this song was arranged for duo étrange by @saharathecellist with permission from the composer

Some of my favourite moments from @randy_woolf’s piece “a special education” that I premiered on Friday with @compcord. I was so honoured when Randy decided to write a piece for me, and it’s the longest contemporary solo cello work I’ve ever learned; totalling 30 minutes.

In the continuing saga of the YES-NO-YES-NO nature of life, I have good news and bad news!

BAD NEWS FIRST! The world is still on fire!

BUT NOW THE GOOD NEWS! I have just been awarded a grant from @regionalarts to brandish art all up in the face of every last bit of the BS masquerading as current events!

This RACC grant supports a reboot of the show I produced last summer with luminaries like @kathyexploding, @bonniemiksch, @randy_woolf and @cellochaplin (all of whom will be joining again!) entitled "The Female Gaze: Women and Allies Petrify the Patriarchy" at PSU's Lincoln Hall in April!

This little clip is from the world premiere of my piece "Rant" (for voice, piano and martini) from way back in 2021, when my drag better half, Tartie FaLouze, burst fully-bedazzled into this world with the performances of "Fierce, Fabulous, and Fully Coiffed" at the Clinton Street Theater in PDX.

It's funny to look back at this and realize how relatively tame it was. Hahaha, in those glory days when we still had Roe v. Wade. Hahaha, in that rosy time when the patriarchy seemed like the primary thing we all had to smash.

Tartie has had to up her game with every subsequent performance (some of them ALSO supported by RACC!!!) to keep up with the avalanche of crap (crapalanche) that has been doing nothing but gaining momentum since.

Thanks to RACC, Tartie gets to ride again at "The Female Gaze", along with the many other fabulous, heartbreaking, hysterical, and faith-restoring things on this show.

April 11, 2026: save the date!!

Catey Ott Dance Collective Spotlight:
Composer Randy Woolf!
Randy Woolf has provided incredible music for CODC for over 20 years. His incredible rhythms, tones, internal mini-sections and music shifts, and inspiring tempos have brought us so many inspiring and intuitive choreographic works. Always grateful to Randy, and also to his amazing wife, Kathleen Supove, who is featured in many of his works.

Randall Woolf studied composition privately with David Del Tredici, Joseph Maneri, and at Harvard, where he earned a Ph.D. He is a member of the Common Sense Composers Collective, and was Composer/Mentor for the Brooklyn Philharmonic. He composed a new ballet of “Where the Wild Things Are”, in collaboration with Maurice Sendak and Septime Webre. He is currently composing a work for the Kronos Quartet, and a chamber concerto for pianists Kathleen Supové and Ju-Ping Song, for the NakedEye Ensemble. He has created 4 pieces for video and live instruments with Mary Harron (director of “American Psycho”) and John C. Walsh. He works frequently with John Cale. He has arranged over 50 of Cale’s songs for chamber orchestra, including the entire "Paris 1919" album,"Music For A New Society", and songs from "The Velvet Underground And Nico". His works have been performed by Kathleen Supové, Jennifer Choi, Timothy Fain, Mary Rowell, Todd Reynolds, ETHEL, conductor and flutist Ransom Wilson, Tara O’Connor, Lindsey Goodman, Le Train Bleu, the Brooklyn Philharmonic, Kronos Quartet, TURNmusic, ASSEM3LY, Fulcrum Point, Pittsburgh New Music Ensemble, Righteous Girls, Sonic Generator, Bang On A Can/SPIT Orchestra, American Composers Orchestra, NakedEye Ensemble, Seattle Symphony, Louisville Orchestra, West Michigan Symphony, Chicago Philharmonic and others.

OUT NOW! If anyone can blow a house down, it might just be flutist Emily Duncan with her debut album, Woolf at the Door, which unleashes some of the wind instrument’s fiercer acoustic potential. Featuring three works by Brooklyn composer Randall Woolf, the album boasts an all-star cast including pianist Kathleen Supové and vocalist Rinde Eckert. Together, Woolf at the Door is a sonic love letter to the strange and theatrical, each track engaging with the art of storytelling in a distinct way and expanding the darker capabilities of the flute.

Aaah! My debut album drops ONE MONTH from today with @neumarecords!

I think this description from Philip Blackburn says it better than I ever could:

“If anyone can blow a house down, it might just be flutist Emily Duncan with her debut album, ‘Woolf at the Door,’ which unleashes some of the wind instrument’s fiercer acoustic potential. Featuring three works by Brooklyn composer @randy_woolf, the album boasts an all-star cast including pianist @kathyexploding and vocalist Rinde Eckert. Together, ‘Woolf at the Door’ is a sonic love letter to the strange and theatrical, each track engaging with the art of storytelling in a distinct way and expanding the darker capabilities of the flute.

The album features two premieres, including ‘Scott Somebody’ — a moving personal tribute to the late Classical-meets-Rock composer, Scott Johnson and his speech-melody compositional technique — and the premiere audio recording of ‘Native Tongues,’ the first (and currently only) concerto for beatbox flute. Also on the program is ‘Everything is Green’ with a captivatingly surreal text by David Foster Wallace blended with a lively instrumental soundworld.”

“Woolf at the Door” has been a two-year labor of love, and it would not have been possible without a whole lot of help from a team of incredible artists, musicians, engineers, and production folks and the support of so many in the contemporary music community.
