As part of the Graphic Design course with Paul Steinmann, students from @medienproduktion_thowl (Faculty of Media and Culture, OWL University of Applied Sciences and Arts in Detmold) developed content specifically for this high-tech playing surface and tested it on-site in the arena.

Thanks to @rapatski Tiemen Rapati, Inga-Målin Strohmeier, Emile (ASB GlassFloor), and Jannis from the FC Bayern Munich Basketball team for the collaboration and support!

Already quite some months ago, as part of a great team we created this performance in the @bimhuis revolving around light, sound and dance: SOL. Where each of the elements could, with the help of technology interact with eachother.

Dance creating sound using gyroscopic sensors
Light creating sound using optical tracking of the stage
And music directing light trough audio analysis
To name a few ;)

One of my favorite technical challenges was to detect if and where a laser beam was stopped using Camera's. Using @touchdesigner we generated an algoritm to track the area between two points in the camera feed which outputed a normalised value of where the beam was intersected.

SOL: a live immersive project by (Grammy 2024 nominated) saxophonist Ben Wendel, in collaboration with visual artist Ruben Van Leer.

Ben Wendel, together with director Ruben Van Leer, has put together a multidisciplinary project called SOL (Sound of Light). With the expertise of audiovisual artist Wes Broersen, choreographer Lukáš Timulak and scenography by Tiemen Rapati, the team has built an “immersive improv machine”, in which Wendel and dancer Alice Godfrey investigate how we interact with our body, nature, memory and trauma. The core of SOL consists of specially designed technology in which music, sound, light and movement are connected in real time. An interaction between solo saxophone, dance, video and a web of lasers. The team previously collaborated with, among others, The Black Eyed Peas, Coldplay, Massive Attack, Nederlands Dans Theater and United Visual Artists.
