The idea for this film starts back in 2014, when I wrote a deeply personal script called “Leaving Tehran” - A coming-of-age story about a young boy whose privileged childhood falls apart during the Iranian Revolution. Family, identity, and the painful realization that home is no longer safe.

The industry responded well. But every time it reached the upper levels of Hollywood I got the same note: “We love your work, we just don’t know how to sell it.” Their advice? Take the politics out. Think more like “Taken.”

I knew what that really meant. They didn’t know how to sell a story with Iranians in leading roles. Iranian cinema is celebrated, as long as it stays labeled as Iranian Cinema. So I made a hard call and pivoted.

For the next few years I tried writing other scripts. Every single one felt empty. Hollow. Soulless. By 2018 I realized the only story I needed to tell was still sitting inside me. Two brothers forced to leave their home, trying to belong in a new world, only to be met with othering, racism, and being told to go home. As a three time immigrant, I knew that world better than anyone.

Then one morning in 2020, coffee in hand, dogs on the couch, I opened the @nytimes and read about Iranian Americans stranded at the Canadian border after the killing of an Iranian general. My thought was immediate: I just became a second class citizen. Not because of anything I did. Simply because of where I was born.

That question would not leave me. When am I, if ever, considered a Good American?
I wrote this film in 2023 knowing it had to exist. Do we judge a person by their actions and character, or by the country they were born in? In today’s world that question has never mattered more.

We may have been born in a foreign country. But we were made in America 🇺🇸 #thegoodamerican #actionthriller #comingsoon
