Why do you create art?

“Applying paint onto a surface, be it paper, canvas, metal, wood, … is an essential act of communicating.

Sometimes you create a piece that, for whatever reason, comes to life.

It feels like peeling off a part of yourself, a part that you have not known before.

That is when I feel most alive.” — Raphael Moser, Vienna, Austria @raphael__moser

"Some years ago, I was lucky enough to be shown some artwork by an artist I’d never heard of called Keith Cunningham. Artwork that had never been seen or displayed before, and was immediately moved by the dark colours and subjects in most cases as well as the heavy layers of paint used. My mind went to Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud - if they had a son, this is him!" - Find out more about how Founder & Owner of The Pilgrm came to collect over 50 pieces of unseen artwork by Keith Cunningham via our online journal. His private collection is now on public display for the first time at The Pilgrm.

We're honoured to announce that a collection of never-been-seen art by the great Keith Cunningham is now on display at The Pilgrm. Described by John Minton as "one of the most gifted painters to have worked at the Royal College'', he was also titled by Apollo Magazine as “the artist who walked away from fame”. On the brink of international recognition, Keith inexplicably decided to withdraw from the art world and all public exhibitions in 1967 despite glowing critical reviews and widespread admiration. Unbeknownst to the world, he went on to produce a huge body of work in secret; creating hundreds of paintings, watercolours, sketches and collages. Many of those pieces have largely remained unseen - including by his wife Bobby Hilson, until now. Head to our journal to find out more (link in bio), or come and see 58 of Keith Cunningham's pieces on display at The Pilgrm until the end of summer.
