Saturday Mass. Weekends aren’t automatic days off, they’re days that COULD be a day off. Discipline is the practice of pushing away the easy path, the comfort, “embracing the Suck” for gains not yet realized. Shiny Objects… We chase them, covet them, admire and dream of them. We work, we pursue, we befriend, and yes, we even conspire and deceive for them. Social Media has gifted us with many things. Some good, Marketers love the access to customers, and a lot of not so good, petty hate and the “Cancel Culture". But it has also shined the light on just how important shiny objects are in our current culture. The relentless quest for Fame, Popularity, Recognition, Influencer Status, “Likes", “Shares”, a “Shout Out”, or a ’Tag” from an individual we admire and envy. We spend countless hours shaping our public perception inside of a blender of narcissism and ego insecurity, spitting out a contrived version of our world that we think appears sexy to the public, friends, colleagues and the digital space. I am guilty as well. For many years I worked very hard on my craft. I had some success, and also a shit ton of failures. I also chased Hollywood’s shiny objects; who’s casting this show, producing that movie, seeing my name at or near the top of a Call Sheet, seeing my face and name on movie poster, attending red carpet premiers, walking the Press Line for publicity, paying my publicists to acquire Press and Media coverage, all in the quest to step up my Brand, and bask in the light of another shiny object... But with age, and the scars of many battles lost, comes the wisdom of an old Lion. Being the Lion of your life is about taking charge of the things that truly matter in life regardless of how shiny or sexy the task. Today my priorities – The love of Family, Friends, Unconditional Relationships, helping and supporting my Pride with respect and dignity. We do the daily work in solitary, away from the eyes of opinion and social observation. I constantly look inward to solve the riddles of my fear and uncertainty, managing the blizzard of thoughts that more often than not, are fantasies of an unfocused process, and yes, I am guilty as hell, a work in progress, but I’m here, and I’m working every day. And today’s Lion work? Cleaning the dirt and pine needles out of the rain gutters. The Queen says “ The gutters really need to be cleaned “. And there it is...
