This year’s theme at the @naturalhairshow was “Elevate” — and that word stayed with us long after we left Atlanta 🌱 This set was shot on the escalator completely intentionally. #BehindthePhoto: “Daughters of the Caribbean: Rooted Across Water” 🌺 🌊 Across the Caribbean women have been the keepers of culture, spirituality, food and community for generations. The off-shoulder silhouettes, the gold jewelry, the hibiscus and the flags worn on the body are a living history that Caribbean women have carried, protected and passed down across oceans and time zones. Sydney Patterson created this series to honor exactly that. As a Caribbean American woman of Brazilian and Barbadian heritage Sydney brought together women connected to Haiti, Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Trinidad, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Bahamas and Guyana. Some of many Caribbean islands. To be seen fully and on their own terms. Every detail was intentional. The food, the dress, the adornment, the community. Shot in Atlanta, rooted in the islands. We thank @sydneympatterson for her vision and craft and for creating a space where these women could show up completely as themselves.
