“It means a lot to represent the African American community to keep growing the game and bring in more people that look like me.”

Malik Jones is already a two-time Paralympic champion, standing at the top of the sport with Team USA. But his story didn’t begin on the podium it started long before, in Colorado, where he was born with a rare congenital condition called tibial hemimelia, meaning his shin bones were absent. At just 10 months old, both legs were amputated below the knee.

What could have defined his limits instead became the foundation of his strength. Introduced to sled hockey by his grandmother in Littleton, Colorado, Malik immediately connected with the game. “I was an athlete at heart. They got me into a sled, gave me all the equipment, and I just went out there and had fun.” That first moment on the ice sparked something deeper a purpose.

Sled hockey is a sport that demands full-body strength, control, and resilience, with players propelling themselves across the ice using their upper body. For Malik, it became more than a sport it became a vision. When he discovered it was part of the Paralympic Games, the dream became clear.

Even before making Team USA, he wore a custom prosthetic designed with the American flag a manifestation of where he believed he was going. By 14, he was named to the U.S. National Development Team, and at 16, he made his debut for the senior national team, continuing a path once opened by Tim Jones, the first Black sled hockey player to represent Team USA at the Paralympic Games.

His performances speak for themselves. At the 2022 Beijing Paralympic Winter Games, he scored five goals in five games, including two in the gold medal game, helping extend Team USA’s dominance. He followed that with continued success at world level and returned in 2026 to help secure a historic fifth consecutive Paralympic gold medal.

But beyond medals, Malik understands the impact of representation. “There are times you want to quit, but you have to keep going. You have to love what you do.”

From manifestation to reality, Malik Jones is shaping the future while continuing a legacy.

An open letter to the dyNaSTY boys,

Yall did it! You EARNED it! GOLD BABY!!!

Day in and day out, for the two months I had the honor of training with you all, I witnessed hard work, intention, dedication, smiles, tears, plenty of banter, and above all a brotherhood

You never lost sight of the goal. The goal was never just gold.

The goal was showing up every day, being the best versions of yourselves, and continuously raising the bar. Gold just happened to be the outcome, and that is the true mark of a Champion.

To the rookies and young bucks, you should be proud of how you stepped up. Big or small, your impact does not go unnoticed.

To the veterans and old heads, thank you for leading by example. The team’s success is no coincidence. It is the standard you have set.

And to those retiring, you will be missed.. But you are much bigger than the sport. You are destined for so much, and I cannot wait to see how your lives flourish from this point on.

It was an honor to be a part of this journey with you all. I cannot wait to run it back with you in four years, but until then we are going to enjoy this one!!!
