Thank you to everyone who joined us for yesterday’s History Hour! We were honored to have Stonish Pierce, President and CEO of St. Mary's Health Care System, lead the program on St. Mary's history and its impact on Athens and the local healthcare industry. Attendees explored the hospital’s pivotal moments and heard stories about the visionaries who shaped its legacy. A special thanks to Rashe’s Cuisine for providing a delicious lunch!

We appreciate everyone who came out and extend a big thank you to the St. Mary's team for such an incredible presentation. Mark your calendars for our next History Hour on Tuesday, November 19, when we’ll explore the legacy of The Red & Black, UGA’s campus newspaper.

Will we see you today at September's History Hour?

Each month, Historic Athens One Story offers free programming at the Lyndon House, working to foster a community-wide appreciation of historic buildings, neighborhoods, and community heritage. This month, we’re exploring the history of the Ellard-Weir House at 149 Cobb Street 🏡

This two-story home, blending Colonial Revival and Craftsman styles, was the residence of Mary Lou Weir, an educator and former principal of Chase Street (now Johnnie Lay Burks) Elementary, from its construction until 1966. Recently added to the 2023 Athens Places in Peril list, the house now faces significant threats to its preservation. The Historic Cobbham Foundation is working to save it and promote adaptive reuse, building on the efforts of past owners to preserve its historical integrity.

Join us at noon TODAY to learn more about the Ellard-Weir House and enjoy a complimentary lunch from Rashe’s Cuisine! We can’t wait to see you 👋

If you have never participated in the Recipe Contest with us here @littlekingsshuffleclub during the Downtown Culinary Showcase 9/14, 9/21, 9/28 from 2-5pm then you have been missing a treat. Here are our fresh produce sponsored by @farm2neighborhood and @foodbanknega that you can pick up for free.

If you want to participate in the recipe contest:

1: sign up
2: pick up your produce
3: bring back next Saturday’s market (prepared dish, sample ready, copies of your written recipe, and give us permission to use in our community recipe book we’re creating)
4: enjoy 😊

This would not be possible without @downtownathga @athensareachamber @rashecuisine

Thank you to everyone who packed the house for our last History Hour! We had the pleasure of welcoming Cheryl McCormick, Executive Director of the Athens-Area Humane Society. Attendees learned about the rich history of the organization—from its start as a refuge for working horses in 1899 to its evolution into Athens’ leading animal welfare facility.

Special thanks to Cheryl for her incredible presentation, Rashe’s Cuisine for the delicious lunch, and the Lyndon House Arts Center for hosting us. Your continued support helps us celebrate and preserve our community’s rich history.

Mark your calendars for our next History Hour on Tuesday, August 20th! We’ll be joined by Ashley Shull and Justin Kau to explore the stories behind the Mayflower Restaurant—Athens' oldest eatery—and other local favorites. Whether you're a history buff or a food enthusiast, this event promises to offer a unique glimpse into the culinary legacy of the Classic City. Don't miss out on this journey through time and taste!
