Last week was the final exhibition of my work, along with my peers of the last four years, before we are pushed out of the nest of the FIT Illustration Department.
A lot of what people ask you at your graduating showcase, and I imagine, after most tangible, landmarks of achievement, is “how do you feel?” And I, to no fault of any one asker, felt the frame-adorned walls closing-in on me. Faced with the complexities of an exceptionally talented group’s achievements, vying for air, wall space and acclaim. The accomplishments of a large life milestone can feel less like a check off of a task, and more the disappearance of four years.
On top of a pandemic. It’s fair to say I’m feeling a bit more “prey” than “apex predator” in this transition.
“Consumption of art” means when it’s their full-time work. To be vulnerable, like a wounded impala, is to create. And to create, in my case, will be for consumption by the things much bigger than me. Time, unconventional work-life balance, public opinion, lower economic projections, ~𝘌𝘹𝘱𝘰𝘴𝘶𝘳𝘦~ , staying the fuck off my phone. All factors that soon hopefully fuel a confident, driven, more flamboyantly-patterned, top-of-the-food-chain hunter, - or maybe an editorial spread to start.

I made this piece in conversation with the increased reliance on convenience we are experiencing. We have become too accustomed to our abilities to obtain, in as short as seconds of request. In this image, the image targets physically-abled UberEats/GrubHub dependents, who live in walkable cities, just to order-in delivery. This culturally extending to the once harsh plains of the Serengeti, where teal impalas gallop to Baobab trees, just to vault themselves up to the inert Leopard’s (too large/beefy for a cheetah; jaguars live in dense rainforests) reach, leaving only the remains of plastic, take-out bags from yesterday’s delivery. I also imagined this alluding further to the upper-middle class citizens’ consumption of lower-economic immigrants who fill these demanding, financially-stagnant delivery positions as the means to “live,” in a perpetually-stagnant class system that only feeds those “up high in the trees.”

Saying goodbye to @fitnyc with a mural 🫡. It was such a great and challenging experience! I was a little intimidated at first but thanks to all the kind words from classmates and strangers I think I finished pretty strong! Not bad for my first ever mural. Also big thanks to our project manager @cuadrosa for the motivation and advice I appreciate u! Shoutout to my neighbors @rat_is_online on the right and @tealraindrops on the left, amazing work!
Congratulations to all the classmates that put up a mural this week and best of luck to whoever’s still working!
