So fun to work with playwright Katie Bender as part of Rattlestick’s mentorship program! Katie’s amazing play “Howling, Texas” follows a preacher who gets a prophecy from God through her cell phone, as well as a woman finding love on a road trip. And in this photo Katie is putting away the hair suit she MADE for the reading. That’s right, the hair suit, which was magnificent!

Applications for the next round of cycles are open now! Apply via the Rattlestick website!

Wow. Just finished up a weeklong workshop of my play The Long-Distance Love of Tap-Board & Elena, through the Terrence McNally New Works Incubator Fellowship @terrencemcnallyfoundation @rattlestickny. I’m always in awe of what you can do in a week with supportive infrastructure and generous collaborators.

I first started writing this play in 2017 processing the experiences of mentorship I had had as a young tap dancer and finding my place in this art form. Over the years I’ve left it, revisited it, left it; this is the first time I could hear the emotional historical and cross-cultural meanings starting to stir beneath & around the words.

Shoutout to the dream team that made this week possible — Director @rebeccapdx, Writing Mentor @monetsimone, Dance Dramaturg @grimeystepz, Stage Managers @natdimario and Jessica Stekloff, the brilliant cast of @dambroseboyd_thisnthat, @karinacuret, @andres.nicolas.chaves, Japhet Balaban, and @alessandraruiz_, and the wonderful team at Rattlestick. 🙏🏽

I got to tour the iconic @rattlestickny Theatre in the Village yesterday. We walked through the construction site and spoke about the plans for this space. We are hoping for an Autumn open!

Supporting our arts and cultural institutions is one of my top priorities. They are the heart of District 3 and help make New York City the arts and cultural capital of the world. I cannot wait to see Rattlestick welcome audiences back through its doors.
