Can work be a flywheel for neighbourhood transformation?

A great afternoon with the Grip op Systemen studio at the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst, exploring the role of work in the transformation of Feijenoord and the former Hunter Douglas area.

It felt particularly personal. I’ve worked in Feijenoord for more than 20 years, from KCAP’s office in the Piekstraat, experiencing its transformation first-hand.

At the IABR, I presented KCAP’s “Feijenoord Island – High ambitions, many actors”, developed with Irma van Oort, the Municipality of Rotterdam and many local stakeholders.

With the students, we discussed how makers, workshops, small businesses and local work can become part of the future of the neighbourhood, rather than being displaced by it.

Inspiring to see this topic through fresh eyes. Thank you Jutta Hinterleitner and the students!

Looking back to Twist and Shout — Archiprix 2026

As we wrap up this year’s Archiprix, we look back at the theme that brought this generation of projects together: Twist and Shout.

Twist celebrates thoughtful interventions that work with what already exists - drawing on local traditions, ecological conditions and the strength of communities.

Shout represents projects that use spatial imagination as a force for change: provoking wonder, raising awareness and challenging us to see the world differently.

The jury recognised both approaches in this year’s nominees, celebrating projects that engage with complex spatial, ecological and socio-political questions and imagine a more inclusive, future-oriented public realm.

Inspired by the raw energy of The Beatles’ Twist and Shout, the theme perfectly captures the spirit of the Archiprix 2026 generation: inventive, engaged and ready to make some noise.

A big thank you to all our nominees, winners, the jury, our production team, all Dutch master’s programs, our supporters and of course our visitors! 🌀📣

Marconi Stadsmarkt

Studio work focused on re-using and re-purposing industrial buildings and integrating the design within a new urban structure next to the newly transformed Citrusveiling. The building will transform in phases and focuses on making it accessible and public in every phase.

Rethinking Logistics Parks

Scenario study part of studio work on the rethinking of monofunctional logistics parks in the Netherlands. The scenarios explore a hyperscaled, global and dehumanized industrial park and a small scale, green and multifunctional industrial park with focus on a resilient local economy. Juxtaposing the scenarios make tensions visibles.

OASE 122/123. Ecological Pedagogies // nai010

How should architects be educated in an age of climate change, ecological crisis and resource scarcity?

This special double issue of OASE explores how ecological thinking can become more than just another subject in the curriculum—it asks how it can fundamentally reshape architectural education itself.

Through essays, course descriptions, reflections and student projects, contributors present new ways of teaching that embrace collaboration, ecological awareness and practice-based learning. Together they offer a rich collection of ideas that challenge conventional design education while inspiring architects, educators, researchers and students alike.

And finally, thank you to all the students who joined. The way you engaged with the city, asked questions and saw things I hadn't noticed myself made this trip what it was.
