🇯🇵 (swipe👉) Shirakawa-go under the snow, Gifu Prefecture. The roofs are definitely picturesque, but their steep angle is first and foremost practical.
⸻
The traditional farmhouses are built in the gassho-zukuri style, named after their resemblance to hands joined in prayer. Their steep thatched roofs help shed the region’s heavy snow, while the large upper floors were traditionally used for raising silkworms.
⸻
Shirakawa-go lies along the Shō River, surrounded by the mountains of central Japan. Heavy snowfall and difficult winter access long contributed to the region’s isolation, shaping both its architecture and its forms of social organization. In 1995, Shirakawa-go was inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List. Today, Shirakawa-go is both a major tourist destination and a living village.

Yesterday’s wildfire haze sun over the Marlborough City Hall Clock Tower.

Thick haze arrived in Massachusetts yesterday from the Canadian wildfires creating an eerie feel. This shot was taken an hour before sunset. I ended up photographing the sun with two other buildings before it disappeared so I’ll have a couple more shots coming soon.

@canonusa R5. Canon 100-500mm. Handheld shot.

#BestOfTheBayState #Raw_NewEngland #NBNMustSee #Yes_BUSA #Yes_Globe A bright orange sun with red tones sets above a brick clock tower with yellowish skies framing the building.

📂 From My Archives

There was a time when I’d spend hours walking around the city, looking for light, patterns, and interesting angles.

Looking back… I think I was pretty cool. 📷✨

Maybe it’s time to find that version of me again.

Kyoto, in and around … the Philosopher’s trail and the Northern Kyoto hidden gems. My favourite was the Hosen-in Temple, out in the northern mountains of Kyoto where you can have a zen matcha tea ceremony served with traditional sweets whilst viewing an intriguing, some might say macabre ‘blood ceiling’. Its historic repurposing at its “best” … the blood stained floor boards of an ancient battle of samurai warriors trying to defend a castle have been repurposed and used as a ceiling in the temple. It’s very subtle but you can see footprints if you focus.😱

A conversation about cherry blossoms.

Photographed on a NYC day trip with @_daniellewells_ last Saturday.

#BestOfTheEmpireState #NYCPrimeShot #Raw_USA #Raw_NewYorkCity #Raw_Seasons Two women stand close together under a cherry tree pointing their hands up towards a branch and talking as pink blossoms frame them. One woman holds a purse covered in yellow flowers.

Just a couple more lupin shots from New Zealand. Why??? I know they are a somewhat controversial weed (as all “wildflowers” are)…but they make me happy. Don’t go looking for lupins in NZ now. The season has passed. These were the few remaining in a couple of high locations in the Southern Alps (Lindis Pass and on the road out to Paradise (yes, that is a real place in NZ) in early January.

Lake Tekapo, New Zealand - home to the picturesque Church of the Good Shepherd, which trades tranquility for tourist crush at sunset. My video at the end gives you a glimpse of the real deal compared to the photographic serenity we always see from here. It’s time to dive back into work after the holiday weekend for me tomorrow. In the meantime, here’s a small selection from Tekapo taken at different times across a couple of January days.
