ALT Ricalco is a 3 styles typeface featuring a Slab, a Semi and a Sans cut.Gently inspired by the 1934 Olivetti logo designed by Xanti Schawinsky, a Bauhaus student and close friend of Herbert Bayer who lived and worked in Italy in the early 1930s.With a dominant geometric foundation, Ricalco is strongly informed by its Bauhaus influence, but it’s not afraid to break some rules: shapes are sharp and precise, geometric wherever possible, but leave space to the quirk, the unexpected, the slightly “off” moments. The way some letters overreach, almost creating a sense of urgency that breaks the peaceful, methodic rhythm of sacred geometry. Spacing is generous, kerning is kept to the bare minimum; it wants to resemble the texture of a classic monospaced typewriter font, but also be suited for a more versatile range of uses. Design: Tina Božan Production: Giulia Boggio

The soul of the machine. Olivetti understood that machines didn't have to look like machines. Through the work of designers such as Giovanni Pintori, type, colour, geometry and image transformed mechanical products into something expressive and distinctly human. That tension sits at the heart of ALT Ricalco. The typeface begins with a rigid system, but the visual language around it is deliberately more tactile. For Tina Božan, that meant allowing the constraints of the typewriter to shape the typeface, and then seeing how much expression when using it in combination with geometric shapes and marks. Type Design by @rawrawletters and @bojjoe Launch Graphics by @tjasulla Support @amberweav_

Inspired by the mechanics of the typewriter, ALT Ricalco explores what happens when a typeface is forced to work within a strict spatial system. Rather than smoothing out the quirks of the machine, Tina Božan leaned into them. Repetition creates rhythm. Fixed positions create unexpected relationships between letters. Rather than simply mimicking the language of a vintage typewriter. ALT Ricalco’s interprets what makes the machine interesting in the first place. “Designing a typeface is a long process of constant testing, adding and subtracting elements.” Type Design by @rawrawletters and @bojjoe Launch Graphics by @tjasulla Support @amberweav_ Available now. alt-tf.com

Limitations breed character. Typewriters operate within a strict set of rules. Every letter occupies the same amount of space, and every character arrives through the same mechanical process. It's a rigid system, almost bureaucratic in its precision. Constraints however, don’t necessarily make work less expressive. Sometimes they make you more inventive. Rather than attempting to remove the restrictions of the machine, ALT Ricalco, designed by Tina Božan led by ALT’s Creative Director Giulia Boggio, embraces them. Its kerning is kept deliberately minimal, allowing the spatial, mechanical limitations associated with the typewriter to become an integral part of the typeface's visual character. “The charm of typography lies precisely within those limitations.” ALT Ricalco. 600+ glyphs · 1 weight · 3 styles · Extended Latin support Type Design by @rawrawletters and @bojjoe Launch Graphics by @tjasulla Support @amberweav_ ****************************************** test live on screen alt-tf.com ****************************************** #alttype #fonts #typedesign #typefaces #typeface #typography *******************************************

With Tina Božan (@rawrawletters)we are cooking up something really fun at the @alt__tf HQ One of Alt’s milestones for the year was offering our first ever internship. When @amberweav_ and I talked about how to structure this we wanted to make it really fun, valuable, intensive and as close to real life workflow as possible, as we both recognised the need for hands on experience when approaching working for a foundry or running one yourself. We are sooo close and its been a real struggle to keep it all hush hush as the typeface we’re developing with Tina is so nice and will be a real fresh addition to the Alt catalogue 👀 As a self taught designer with a raging imposter syndrome, this has been a huge learning and training opportunity for myself as well, and we look forward to showing you what we’re working on, it’s really fun! #typedesign #typefesigner #slabserif #typeface
