Sushi chef lore drop 🐟🍣

My previous career dreams were to own my own sushi counter some day, but Im really happy to instead be in a place where I can just serve fish for fun 💅

I adored the chance to so this dinner and im so grateful to @arrkay6 and @dr.callanh for contributing so generously to the project 🫶🫶

All the fish is sourced through @omakaseconnection who have just been an absolute dream come true for a hobbyist like me being able to get such amazing fish 🫶🫶

2 more weeks and 4k to go! We are already green lit but Im confident we can make it all the way 🙂‍↕️

KY SARGEANT (she/they) also known on stage as Kay, entered the Vancouver performance space in 2023 as a spoken-word poet before shifting to stand-up comedy. Ky is the founder of Transgirls: Raw and Uncut and has solo-produced the show for the last 3 years.

Sargeant launched Trans Girls: Raw & Uncut as North America’s only regular comedy show dedicated to trans women. The debut event immediately sold out, forcing the addition of extra shows to meet audience demand. The production eventually moved to The Birdhouse and became a major draw in the city. It secured a spot in the Just for Laughs VANCOUVER festival lineup for two consecutive years as part of the Sirius XM Best of the West series, where it sold more tickets than any other locally produced show.

Today, the network has grown to include nearly twenty trans women comedians in Vancouver, establishing a new community-driven model for local independent comedy.
They just did a fundraising event The Birdhouse for their currently in production documentary on Trans Girls: Raw and Uncut.

2026 will be the most important pride of my life.

It was the first year of my life I finally understood the meaning of community.

Not as an abstract platitude, but as the reciprocal energy you receive for everything you give into it.

Building friendship is something I've struggled with most of my life, and its taken me nearly 30 years to realize its because I never learned how to receive it.

This year, that changes.

This year, the scale of my work has exploded so far beyond what I could possibly handle on my own, but when I was pushed near to breaking, I found myself surrounded by people who refused to let it happen.

I owe my life to those people. I owe my life to my community.

For all the ways, both big and small, that so many hundreds of y'all have contributed to everything I do. I owe it to you.

And I'm excited for what comes next.
And I'm excited we're doing it together ❤️

When Ky Sargeant (@itsanew_kay) joined the Vancouver comedy scene in 2023, few trans women were performing stand-up comedy, and she recounts that it never felt like a truly welcoming or open environment for trans women. Through monthly open mics, Ky started building a community from the ground up, eventually launching the Trans Girls: Raw & Uncut (@rawuncutcomedy) shows. In just a few short years, the number of trans women comedians in the city has grown to nearly 20, and the Trans Girls comedy show remains the only one of its kind in North America dedicated to trans women.

Following this success, a feature-length documentary about the show is in production and expected to be released as early as 2027. Ky serves as executive producer and subject, with Mily Mumford (@milygrams) as director. The film follows seven trans women both on and off stage as they navigate the transphobia of today’s political climate, celebrating the joy and success they’ve created in the face of it.

Ky and Mily were recently on the CBC radio program The Early Edition to discuss their ambitious project and the crowdfunding campaign crowdfunding campaign helping bring it to life. Listen to the segment through the link in our bio.
