Our #ImageOfTheDay shows 20-year-old Miss Udo Affia of the Nigerian Broadcasting Service (NBS) in 1953, controlling music turn-tables on the radio. At the time, people with this job were called “spinners”, but we know them today as disc jockeys, or deejays. Udo Affia was an expert spinner, who played and joined the music broadcast over radio to entertain listeners between programs and during specific music segments. Educated at Queen’s College, Lagos, Affia was one of first two women operators employed by the NBS, which broadcast radio signals across the entire country. Every female deejay in Nigeria can look up to Miss Udo Affia as a pioneer in the field.
