Isolated Guitar Track of Paul, George, and John’s guitar parts on the three-way guitar solo on The Beatles “The End” (Visual Credit for the video: @rockbandstems)

The guitar exchange in “The End” works because each Beatle is instantly recognisable inside the same structure. The idea began with George Harrison, who suggested an instrumental guitar section. John Lennon then pushed it further: Paul McCartney, Harrison and Lennon would each take turns, trading two-bar solos in sequence. McCartney goes first, Harrison follows, Lennon answers, and the pattern repeats three times. What makes the passage so effective is how clearly their personalities come through. McCartney plays with a more melodic sense of phrasing. Harrison leans heavily on string bends, giving his lines a more vocal quality. Lennon comes in rougher, using heavier distortion and a more aggressive attack. Geoff Emerick later remembered the atmosphere in the studio as unusually playful. He said the three of them looked like “gunslingers,” determined to outdo one another, but without tension or hostility. What he heard was three musicians enjoying the competition.

After Lennon’s final turn, the arrangement shifts immediately into the closing piano chords of “And in the end...”, before the orchestration takes over and Harrison returns for the final guitar line.
