2026 Ferragosto Giancarlo De Carlo, a self-proclaimed anarchist, won the commission in 1969 to design the Villaggio Matteotti, a residential complex for the workers of the Terni steelworks. He ran a participatory design process, interviewing the steelworkers and their families to decide how the space should function. In 18 BCE, Emperor Augustus declared the Feriae Augusti to mark the end of the agricultural harvest, the most brutal, labor-intensive part of the year Two millennia later, post-war industrial giants built on that template. During the Miracolo Economico, factories like the Terni steelworks dictated the rhythm of the entire Italian economy. Assembly line manufacturing only functions if everyone works, so the plants instituted mandatory collective vacations. Becoming Undisciplined The editors of Pedagogies for Anti-Disciplinary Design Education (Routledge, 2026) announce Becoming Undisciplined, an international series of public conversations marking the book’s publication. Edited by Mitesh Dixit, Fedah Taqi, and James Westcott, the volume brings together teaching experiments from contributors across twelve universities in ten countries. At a moment when design education is caught between institutional inertia, market pressures, and planetary crises, the series asks how pedagogy might confront the entanglements in which design operates. Moving beyond disciplinary divisions, these discussions will explore practical, ethical, and context-specific alternatives for design education. The talks begins at Pratt Institute and the School of Visual Arts in New York City in October, then moves to Politecnico di Milano, the University of Montenegro, UCL Bartlett School of Architecture in London, and ETSAM Madrid. In 2027, the tour continues at CEPT University in Ahmedabad and at Tsinghua University in Beijing. Each event will bring editors and contributors together with faculty, students, practitioners, and the public through presentations, invited responses, and panel discussions. Pedagogies for Anti-Disciplinary Design Education (Routledge), edited by Mitesh Dixit, Fedah Taqi, James Westcott, will be released for sale on May 11, 2026. At a moment when architectural education is strained by institutional inertia, market pressures, and overlapping planetary crises, this volume calls for a radical rethinking of design pedagogy. Rather than treating climate, nature, inequality, food systems, and other urgent concerns as secondary topics, the book argues that they require a reordering of pedagogy itself. Bringing together 15 contributors from 12 universities across 10 countries, the book documents emerging pedagogical experiments that respond to the transcalar conflicts shaping design today. It asks what becomes possible when architectural education moves beyond disciplinary silos and engages the wider political, ecological, historical, and economic conditions in which design operates. Pedagogies for Anti-Disciplinary Design Education makes the case that another design education is not only necessary, but already underway. It offers frameworks, methods, and examples for educators, students, and practitioners seeking more critical, connected, and responsible ways of teaching and learning. Contributors include Camillo Boano, Chandrani Chakrabarti, Mariel Collard, Daniel Daou, Mauro Gil-Fournier, Mark Heller, Kalandar Kamalkhan, Sisi Liang, Sonal Mithal, Francisco Vergara Perucich, Richard L. Preragine, Elena Tudela, Ed Wall, Tim Waterman, and Shiyu Wei.

Out Spring 2026 by Routledge Architecture. Architectural education today is stretched between institutional inertia, market orientation, and planetary polycrisis. Contemporary urgencies – climate, nature, inequality, food systems– are typically treated superficially, when they demand a reordering of the terms of pedagogy itself. Pedagogies for an Anti-Disciplinary Design Education assembles methods from 15 contributors – across 12 universities in 10 countries – who are attempting to encompass the trans-scalar conflicts that design must take responsibility for. Why anti-disciplinarity? Architecture is undoubtedly permissive in its range of interests and roles. Still, in design schools today, even subjects that share teaching spaces – architecture, urbanism, landscape, preservation, (nature) conservation, interior design, industrial design, etc. – are structurally prevented from interacting. And architecture education is so demanding and so market-oriented that engaging disciplines beyond design schools – geography, sociology, history, politics, theory – is even harder. This book argues that a radical rethink is needed. An anti-disciplinary approach can engage the entangled supply chains, energy regimes, debt structures, border policies, histories of dispossession, and more-than-human ecologies in which design operates. Another design education is not only imaginable but already emerging in the experiments documented here, and it can be pursued without denying the constraints within which most of us work.
