The Rock was rocking last night🎸⚾️

George Birge lit up the stage pregame, and the Marlins followed it up with a walk-off win in extras against the Forest City Owls.

Continuing with the 2017 MLL 12 Year Old Williamsport All-Star team, after a narrow loss to the defending State Champs from Wellesley, Melrose faced a must win against the D11 Champs from Walpole.

Gavin Donohue, literally knocked out of the game against Wellesley the day before after taking a wicked line drive off the shin, was back on the hill vs. Walpole on Friday night, July 21st, trying to pitch Melrose into the Section 3 finals. Gavin delivered, pitching 4.2 innings of three hit ball while walking only one and striking out 10 Rebel batters.
After two scoreless innings to open the game, Melrose jumped into the lead in the third inning. Ronan Donohue singled and then CJ Moriconi got the scoring started, ripping a line drive home run over the left field fence at Ryan Field in Charlestown to give Melrose a 2-0 advantage. Jack Merrulo and Will Dugan got on base for Melrose following Moriconi's home run and they were knocked home by a clutch single by catcher Brendan Zink, increasing Melrose's lead to 4-0 after three.

Walpole's James Gaba cut into Melrose's lead with a two run bomb to make it 4-2 after four innings. Ronan Donohue connected for a double in the 4th and Zack Federico connected for his own double, driving in Ronan to provide some cushion for Melrose. Melrose's defense again made key plays, with strong efforts from Drew Harrington, Alec Taitano, Sean Thomas, Jake Bird, AJ Izzi, Stephen Fogarty and Jack Lavery.

Walpole showed tremendous fight, scoring single runs in the 5th and 6th innings. But tonight was Melrose's night as reliever CJ Moriconi got the save to preserve Melrose's 5-4 victory, sending them to the 2017 Section 3 finals against Wellesley, and earning them a late night pizza party at Regina's! The 2017 Melrose Little League season was special for so many reasons. One of the biggest highlight's was our 12 year old District All-Star Williamsport team that made it to the State Finals in North Reading. After beating Medford Little League for our first District 12 title since 1992, Melrose advanced to the Section 3 Championships at Ryan Field in Charlestown.

First up for Melrose at Sectionals was the D9 Champs from Allston-Brighton. AB jumped out quick thanks to a 1st inning home run by catcher John Reen to take a 1-0 lead. But Melrose answered in the bottom of the 1st with Gavin Donohue belting his 3rd leadoff home run of the tournament to tie the score at 1-1 after the first. Starting pitcher Ronan Donohue silenced the AB bats in the next two innings and Melrose's offense went to work.

Ronan helped his own cause when he lined a double in the 3rd inning, scoring Stephen Fogarty and Gavin Donohue to extend Melrose's lead. Jake Bird would score Ronan with an RBI in the 3rd and Sean Thomas would score Brendan Zinck in the 4th as Melrose built a 5-1 lead after four innings. Melrose's pitching and defense kept AB score at 1. After Ronan pitched, CJ Moriconi and Jack Merullo each tossed a scoreless inning, before Gavin came in to close the game out. Key defensive plays were made by catcher Zinck, as well as Alec Taitano, Zack Federico, Will Dugan, Jack Lavery and centerfielder Andrew Izzi.
Anchoring the defense was slick fielding 1st baseman Drew Harrington. Harrington put away several chances at first from his sharp infielders. Harrington also provided some fireworks with the bat, drilling a deep home run to right field, over the scoreboard and into the adjacent field. Truly a memorable blast! Final score was Melrose 7 Allston-Brighton 1, and Melrose was on their way towards a Section 3 Title!

You miss baseball, I miss baseball, we all miss baseball! So over the next couple of days and weeks, we here at Melrose Little League will be digging into our archives and sharing some of our fondest memories. If you have a memory or a picture you'd like to share or see highlighted, please message MLL here on Facebook.

We're going to start with a look back almost four years ago, to the first combined District 12 playoff game after the merger of Churchill American & Melrose National, as our 12 year old's took on Medford at Lewis Monk on July 6th, 2017.

Gavin Donohue was the starting pitcher for Melrose and he kept the powerful bats from Medford silent for the first few innings, keying the Melrose defense. Gavin D. also got the Melrose offense started early, drilling a leadoff home run deep into the trees in left at Monk to give Melrose an early lead they wouldn't relinquish. Clutch hits by Drew Harrington, Jack Merullo, CJ Moriconi, Jake Bird and Alec Taitano would help spark the Melrose offense on this night.

Playing strong defense behind Gavin D were shortstop Ronan Donohue, who chipped in on offense with a single and a double, as well as outfielders Andrew Izzi, Jack Lavery, Stephen Fogarty, and the strong play from catcher Brendan Zinck.
Melrose broke things open in the 4th inning scoring six runs behind the hot bats of the Donohue brothers, hits from Zinck and Merullo, and a daring delayed steal of home by the aggressive, fleet-footed Zack Federico, who dashed home to steal a run for Melrose. In the 5th inning, Sean Thomas drilled a 2-run home run over the center field fence at Monk to push the Melrose score to 11. Ronan Donohue came in as relief pitcher to close the door on Medford and secure the 11-7 opening game victory for Melrose in the 2017 tournament. Great start for a team that would have many more great memories in a summer to remember!

The 2017 Melrose All-Stars are (front row - L to R) Sean Thomas, Andrew Izzi, Brendan Zinck, Stephen Fogarty, Gavin Donohue, CJ Moriconi, Jack Lavery. (2nd row - L to R) Ronan Donohue, Jack Merullo, Drew Harrington, Zachary Federico, Alex Taitano, Jake Bird, &, missing from photo, Will Dugan.

An all time Legends Classic! Big hit by Big John Garrett @_johnnygarrett to tie the game, big hit by Austin Brune to win the game but the MVP has to go to Payton Manca @payton_manca2121 who came in and did not allow a run in the final 4 innings. Payton improves his record to 10-0 on the season along with 4 saves. He has 104 strikeouts in 80 innings pitched and has a 1.18 ERA on the season with a no hitter to his collection!
