⭐ As part of our three-part 'Spotlight Interviews' series, we’re excited to celebrate our amazing volunteers and their finds.

Gia was part of our 'Archives Revealed' project last summer, and uncovered a letter sent from Neville Chamberlain to Walter Chance outlining the Chance Brothers' "magnificent contribution to the Midland Union."

There's an additional note clearly made later, stating Chamberlain was the "Prime Minister at outbreak of 2nd World War."

Thank you for all your contributions, Gia- you are amazing!

These interviews were made possible thanks to The National Archives’ @nationalarchivesuk 'Archives Revealed' grant.

Have you taken your cayenne pepper today?🌶️

As part of our three-part 'Spotlight Interviews' series, we’re excited to celebrate our amazing volunteers and their finds.

Olivia has been part of the Chance Brothers project since last July, and she's uncovered something pretty spicy...

James Newby, a coal merchant and colliery agent, uncovered a card in remembrance of Robert Lucas Chance. After a chat with William Chance at the Sons of Rest, Mr Newby thoughtfully passed it along, knowing it would be treasured by the family.

We especially love the warm sign-off: “Don’t forget to take the cayenne pepper!”🌶️

Thank you for all your hard work, Olivia- we had a laugh with this one!

"Hoping you are in good health & spirits, don’t forget to take the cayenne pepper.

Yours faithfully,
James Newby"

"Hoping that you are keeping well and that the cayenne pepper is continuing to maintain your spirits.

Yours sincerely,
W.H.A.C."

Linda has been part of the Chance Brothers project since day one, and she’s uncovered something truly special- a signed letter from Prince Albert, dated 1852, thanking Robert Lucas Chance for the Chance Brothers’ support with the Great Exhibition of 1851.

Thank you, Linda- we couldn’t do this without you!

Sir,

I have the honor, as President of the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 to acquaint you that the Commissioners have recently had under their notice the question of the Mutual Guarantees Bond to which you were a party, and the execution of which enabled them to obtain the necessary funds in the year 1850 for proceeding in the discharge of the important duties entrusted to them, with the requisite energy and rapidity.
In Insurance of a resolution arrived at by us, that Guarantee Bond has now been destroyed together with the Bond of a similar nature that was also signed by you, and held by the Bank of England as security for the advance made by them under it, and which advances have been repaid to them by the Commission.

It affords me much pleasure in acquainting you with this fact, and announcing your consequent release from the from the liability which you had taken upon yourself in reference to the Guarantee, to assure you of the lease entertained by Her Majesty’s Commissioners of the important benefits that resulted to the interests of the Exhibition from the assistance you thus gave us at a time when the success that has to intermittently attended it was still a matter of uncertainty.

Very faithfully yours

Albert

President of the Royal Commission
