I read ZERO books in September and I wouldn’t have it any other way. ❤️

Bookstagram surprised me twice this month. First, with the kind of love and support this community showed me. And then, even more beautifully, with how many of you crossed the threshold of acquaintances and became friends.

I know I promised to meet many of you. I managed to meet some, and I couldn’t meet some(yet). But every meetup, planned or unplanned, will always hold a very special place in my heart.

And the love you’ve sent my way in the form of books, personal notes, bookmarks, messages, and so much more has overwhelmed me. Unfortunately, thanks to luggage constraints, I couldn’t bring all the books back with me. But I promise, I’ll bring them all home in due time.

Please know that I have treasured every single one. Every book. Every note. Every bookmark. Every message. ❤️

Someone pointed out the other day, “Swati, you aren’t posting anything, and you’ve lost 600–700 followers.”

All I could do was smile.

Because, boy, what have I gained!
friendships. memories. people I now look forward to meeting again. And perhaps that’s the most beautiful thing Bookstagram has given me.

I hope to cement the friendships I’ve made, meet many, many more of you, and make up for all the meetups I couldn’t make happen this time.

And next time I’m here, let’s not just plan meetups.

Let’s plan a retreat 💜

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for being a part of this journey. I appreciate every single one of you. ❤️

Allow me to introduce myself to the lovely people who have found my account recently.

1. I believe there is no problem that a good book and strong coffee cannot solve.
2. My favourite genres are Historical fiction, literary fiction and mystery, though I occasionally do read Science fiction as well.
3. I love to read books based in different parts of the world.
4. Reading translated fiction helps me in no. 3 as well.
5. I get into a reading frenzy around the International Booker and Booker seasons.
6. I have a head start on many young readers here. So I love it when someone reads a book i read 20 years ago, and goes through the same emotions I did!
7. I started this account to share my reading journey and to find good books to read.
8. I realize that the hype on this platform takes many books to Bestseller lists, at the cost of some really good books that stay unheard of.
9. I do what I can to bring those hidden gems to your feed.
10. My recommendations are 100% honest and personal. (I have lost ARCs and paid opportunities because of this.)

There are 7552 reasons you should follow me. (I’ve given you 10 in this post. The other 7542 are the lovely people who follow me already and I love them for that!)

The Gita isn’t ancient. It’s urgent.
My Gita by Devdutt Pattanaik.

You are Arjuna. Your feed is Kurukshetra. This book is Krishna.

Renounce nothing. Reconnect everything.
My Gita will rewire how you see duty, desire, and detachment.

Not a rulebook. A relationship manual for your soul.

Don’t just scroll past your Kurukshetra. Pick up My Gita. Link in bio.”

“Comment SAMVAAD and I’ll tell you the one idea that hit hardest.”

“Save this. Buy the book. Then come argue with me. That’s the point.”

“Tag someone who needs Krishna’s nudge. You know who.”

Booker Longlist | Black Bag | Luke Kennard

I maintain that it is easy to make someone cry while reading a book, but to make someone laugh while reading, is supremely difficult. After a long time, I laughed while reading, actually laughed till I had tears in my eyes. And that’s what @luukekennnard has been able to achieve in Black Bag.

The premise is simple. A Professor of Psychology, is running an experiment with his students and needs an actor to wear a black bag from head to toe and sit in his class for the whole semester. The Black bag should not talk or in any way communicate with anyone on campus. Net net, the Black bag should have no personality. An out of work actor auditions for this role and is selected, not because of any talent, but because he can fit into the custom made Black Bag.

The book then moves between the protagonist’s life when he is Black Bag and when he is not. The book explores uncomfortable questions like what happens when our identity is stripped away and we are reduced to an unidentifiable, undistinguishable, unremarkable entity? Do we struggle with it or do we get comfortable in the anonymity this offers? How do people around us process this and react to this?

From another professor who wants to perform a sexual experiment with the unknown Black Bag, to a social media influencer who wants to find ways to monetise the idea of Black Bag, we see all shades of human behaviour and motivation. While the undercurrents are serious, the laughs keep coming. I definitely think this book should make it to the Booker Shortlist.

While reading this book, one thought that kept nagging me (and this could land me in controversy) is that half the population in some countries literally exists in public as Black Bag…..Is the experiment so outlandish after all?

Also, I did not realise i own so many black bags!
