⭐ Intricate book covers ⭐ which one is your favourite? Scroll across to see close ups. I love book designs that have a lot of detail; covers where you notice something new every time you look. I'd love it if you could show me yours - take this as a challenge. #intricatebookcovers . I've tagged a few of you, hope you don't mind. Gothic or dark books can often have the most intricate covers, which is why most of these fall into that category. Here we have some witchy books, some indigenous short stories, an anthology of Nordic Tales, two gorgeous Vintage Collector's Classics, a book about fairies and more. Now, back to reading - I've just finished Wild Dark Shore by Charlotte McConaghy and am about to start Nowhere Burning by Catriona Ward. I'm also listening to The Martian on audio. . #bookcovers #bookstagramuk #bookstagram #bookish

My friends, I would like to propose something. Because I plan to cut back on my time here, (and social media in general,) I have been considering some things. . . While I may keep my account here in the hopes that it will help me sell my novel (which may or may not finally appear in print this year) I do feel that the internet is increasingly becoming . . . Not a nice place. My biggest regret about leaving, however, is that I will miss all of you; the lovely readers I’ve found here on Bookstagram. I realize this may be unrealistic, and unsustainable, but I would like to try something: I would like to start writing letters to some of you. Real letters, on real paper, with a stamp. I realize that such an endeavor will not be as convenient, but I think the extra effort could be worth it. For one thing, I don’t think any of us really know each other all that well, though we can likely sense which of us are kindred spirits based on the things we read and the thoughts we share about them, but I think it might be lovely to bring some of our virtual friendships to a deeper, more personal level. I hope that doesn’t sound scary. I just mean because if we are keeping up a correspondence one-on-one there would not need to be so much self censorship; because our words will not be here for all and sundry to see. I’ve been mulling this over for more than a month, but the idea was recently reinforced this past week as I listened to The Correspondent by Virginia Evans. It was a lovely, tragic, heartrending story; and I loved it so much! Yet, there are some quotes in it that really struck a chord with me. . . “An e-mail can in no way replace a written letter. It does concern me that one day all the advancement of technology will do away with the post.” I’ll share another in the comments. If you’d like to be my pen pal, please DM me! 🥰💌🙏 #evelynmercyreads #thecorrespondent #virginiaevans #penpalinvitation P.s. I’ve also added my Goodreads to my profile for those interested. 💖

📚BOOK REVIEW📚 Book club pick, November. 🎧 The Fisherman’s Gift by Julia R. Kelly. Pub date: 03/18/2025. The book: 1900, small Scottish fishing town, a local Fisherman finds a young boy who washes up on the shore. The boy is alive, but there’s a strong resemblance to a boy who was lost at sea and never found 15 yrs earlier. Dorothy’s son. She is understandably rattled by this coincidence. This brings up the past in this small town, where everyone seems to have secrets of their own. My thoughts: 3⭐️. (It was ok). The setting in this book was phenomenal- small Scottish fishing town. Perfect for winter too, winter by the sea! It was somewhat of a mystery yet not much plot- more character driven. I wanted to find out what happened with the boy, but that part wasn’t all that eventful. I think if small town love and gossip, and deeply flawed characters is your thing, this can work. What irks me more, now that I think about it, was the lack of communication and miscommunication theme. The book depended on it too much. It drove me nuts! Everybody gossips, but nobody communicates. I was left confused a lot too! There were very short chapters, multiple POV’s, and past/present timeline. This just wasn’t the right book for me. It was compared to Snow Child, which I loved. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 👉 You can find other reviews from our book club members: @read.write.janis @gigiwhite_genx_bookworm (she loved it!) @thislatestchapter @828kathleen 💫 If you’re interested in joining our book club, we discuss online at the end of the month. Have you read any books by Mary Elizabeth Braddon? I discovered her books when the #victoriansensationbookclub read Lady Audley's Secret back in 2019. We went on to read Aurora Floyd, Henry Dunbar, and The Doctor's Wife together. (I miss reading with you guys!) Braddon quickly became one of my favorite authors, and I highly recommend her books to anyone who will listen. As a Victorian author, who really popularized the Victorian Sensation novel along with Wilkie Collins and Ellen Wood, her books are a lot of fun to read. "It is thus that the puppets often suffer for the sins of him who pulls the strings." Mary Elizabeth Braddon originally published The Black Band under the pseudonym Lady Caroline Lascelles. The pseudonym was later dropped upon discovery of a woman by that name, and publication continued anonymously. The Black Band was published in a halfpenny journal, which catered to the working class. As such, it was never lauded as Braddon's work once her popularity grew. I was able to find an unabridged copy by Sensation Press with a great introduction by Jennifer Carnell, which highlights differences in Braddon's writing dependant upon the intended readership. (I always recommend reading introductions in classics after finishing the story as they generally contain spoilers.) The Black Band is the fantastic tale of a secret, unscrupulous society of thieves and murderers led by the infamous Colonel Oscar Bertrand. Theirs is a tale of murder, intrigue, villainy, and corruption throughout Europe, which has eluded all efforts by the police. The lives of our cast of characters are swept up within the society unbeknownst to most of them. The resulting story was so much fun. The story is intriguing, and it has a great cast of characters, my favorite being Joshua Slythe, our detective's clerk. I couldn't put it down as each new piece of villainy and thread of intrigue entangled the characters. I've been looking for the sequel since I finished reading this, but I've had no luck as it was never published in book form. I need a publisher to republish it. I'll share more of my posts with Braddon's books in my stories and Victorian highlight.

Starting a buddy read this week, led by @read.write.janis with a group of lovely ladies! I loved Wild Dark Shore so I wanted to explore more books by this author. UPDATE: finished! 3.5⭐️. Slow start but really picked up later. There’s a mystery aspect of it that engaged me the most and made me want to find out what happened. I wish I had liked the main character more. She was compulsively self destructive (and never got mental help?), but ruined other lives in the process. Summed up, this book was full of tragedy and hope. ❓Have you read her books? When @behappyreadbooks tagged me in this People on the Spine Challenge, I thought I might have two or three books that fit in that category. I went to my shelves to pull down the B.K. Borison books and then kept pulling more, and more, and then found more after I was reshelving these! 🤪 I saw that @emilies.books also did animals on the spines and I found plenty of those too, so maybe I’ll try that next. 💛 Tagged a few friends if you’d like to search your shelves and play along!

On this day in 2019, this account first drew breath. I found some of you in the first few months of my bookstagramming adventure and have cherished our bookish (and human) connections for years. We got each other through the madness of Covid and all the world has experienced since then, armed with compassion and books. Thank you! Here’s to future conversations and playful exchanges over books and language. I feel so privileged to be among you and my life is richer for you all. One of the unexpected delights of participating in bookstagram, for what’s now quite a few years, is the glut of new to me reads. Prior to joining this community, I was generally a reader of novels with an occasional side trip to poetry and nonfiction. I rarely read short stories. Now, I love a short work of literary fiction. Again, thank you #bookstagram ! 😘 Here are some of my faves and some of my current reads. Do you read novellas or short stories? If so, what are some of your favorites?

My daughter insisted on taking my photo today on a walk. Late afternoon light, as the days grow shorter, is my favorite. I figured I would share a recent pic and do a fast #meetthebookstagrammer post, as it has been quite some time since I’ve shared much beyond reviews and sloppy flat lays. 🏠 I have lived in five states all of which (except one!) are in the western US. Currently live in Boise, ID, but Montana has my 💙. 📚 I am always reading a mix of fiction, poetry, and nonfiction. Currently reading Marilynn Robinson’s Jack and Angeline Boulley’s The Firekeeper’s Daughter. 🎧 I am a big fan of @poetryunbound with @padraigotuama and @onbeing with Krista Tippet in the world of podcasts…. And I enjoy a good audiobook from the public library as I work on projects and clean (recently listened to Lauren Oliver’s Delirium trilogy hoping to pull some optimism from dystopian fiction… not sure it worked). 🏔️🥾🥾 I am an avid hiker and backpacker near and far. My family of four backpacked the Grand Canyon (rim to rim!) last fall and did a three-day trek in Rainier National Park in August. ✍️ In addition to my book review website (litreadernotes.com), I write fiction and creative nonfiction but am terrible when it comes to submitting for publication… someday I hope to be better. 👩‍🏫 I’ve taught writing on and off for two decades and am excited to be in the final months of a masters in teaching (in secondary English). I will finish this MA almost exactly 20 years after I finished my first (in English Lit). Tagging a number of you here… would love to see your recent take on a meet the bookstagrammer… lord knows I am eager to read anything but the news lately!
