Here's my take on the popular #thisismyjam challenge that's going on around bookstagram. I have put a spin on it by choosing two books for each prompt, one fiction & the other nonfiction. Thanks a bunch to @mims_is_reading for tagging me. I have tagged a bunch of you (no pressure!) but feel free to take part if you see this ;)

•• Book Review ••

Motherthing
by Ainslie Hogarth

Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This weird little book had been on my radar for years, but for some reason I was always hesitant to pick it up. It turns out my gut feeling was right: this just wasn’t the right kind of weird for me.

The premise sounded really intriguing: Abby and Ralph live with Ralph’s overbearing and toxic mother, Laura. When Laura, who despised Abby, takes her own life, Ralph falls into a deep depression and becomes convinced that her ghost is still living in the basement.
Abby, who survived a traumatic childhood and longs for a mother figure, desperately tries to hold their lives together. As her obsession with an elderly resident at the nursing home where she works grows stronger, she becomes increasingly unhinged and starts making some truly disturbing decisions.

This was definitely one of the weirdest books I’ve read lately. Reading it felt almost like an invasion of privacy. I usually love stories that let you get this deep into a character’s head, but for some reason this one just didn’t fully work for me. I think a lot of it had to do with the writing style and tone of the story which I didn’t vibe with.

I did enjoy the mix of horror, dark humor, and family drama to some extent, and there were a few moments that made me uncomfortable in a good way.
I also think the author did a good job of exploring grief, depression, complex issues surrounding motherhood, and the impact of toxic relationships.

But especially the second half of the book felt slow and dragged at times, becoming a bit repetitive. It also got quite gross in places, but not in an entertaining way. Additionally, spending so much time in Abby’s head became a bit tedious and monotonous after a while.

Overall, I’m glad I read it because it’s unique and memorable, but it wasn’t a book I loved. If you enjoy weird, unsettling literary horror stories, it’s worth checking out. For me, though, it was more interesting than enjoyable.

📚 Book review: The Reformatory, Tananarive Due

#februarybookreview challenge (I rarely ever do these, so I decided to join in and be more mindful about reviewing in the future... 👀 Wish me luck)

I just finished this masterpiece and I cannot stop thinking about it. The Reformatory is historical fiction that reads like horror, but the terror isn’t just paranormal, it’s history.

Set in 1950s Florida, the story follows 12yo Robbie Stephens Jr., who is sent to a brutal reform school for defending his sister. What unfolds is both heartbreaking and haunting. Robbie can see... More. And through what Robbie sees, we uncover the devastating truths of a system built on Jim Crow injustice.

What makes this book especially powerful is that it’s inspired by Tananarive Due’s own family history. Her great-uncle died at a real Florida reform school, and she spent years researching and writing this story.
Her father was a freedom lawyer during the Jim Crow era, and he colaborated with her on the novel.
You can feel that depth, emotion, and purpose on every page of The Reformatory.

This isn’t just horror. It’s horror with meaning.
It’s important and impossible to forget. Read it.

QUOTD: What are you currently reading and how are you liking it? 👀

PS. I tagged some of you awesome people, but everyone are welcome to join in with their February reviews. ❤️

This is my first #nordicnoirnovember read of the season
If you’re a fan of the genre and would like to join in our discussions, join the @coldhaunts group chat for Nordic Noir or horror reads. Give @readbydusk a follow and she’ll add you to our group
Now back to this book:
It was a first read by the author, and I’m glad I discovered her. Although not a Scandinavian author, the vibe and atmosphere of the book was very similar to the typical gory and dark setting you can expect from a Nordic Noir thriller.

#qotd : what are you looking forward to in November?
