Melanie comes by her love of perogies honestly. And beautifully embroidered blouses. We wished she also secretly played the bandura... alas...

September is Ukrainian Heritage Month. We love so many things about Ukraine — who doesn’t love a good beet borscht, right? We’ve got Ukrainian cookbooks, and novels, and piles of books you can read in Ukrainian. Our new World of Words kids book collection also has picture books written in Ukrainian.

We’re celebrating with a very special presentation on Thursday at 2:00 PM. Halyna Patryliak is here to share “Vyshyvanka — the Code of Ukrainian Culture”. She’s bringing her vast collection of Vyshyvanka embroidered shirts (worth attending just to see this for yourself), and sharing the powerful symbolism behind it. Its going to be fascinating.

And in case you were wondering, Melanie will also be there wearing something fabulous.

It’s the first of our “WHAT’S IN MY BAG” book lovers series. We LOVE “Melanie Suggestions”. She is our go-to gal for any books by female authors who have work translated to English. Her taste is perfection and here she offers such a variety. If you’re looking for more, check out the latest booklist she’s created for Women In Translation Month (AUG 2026). You’ll find these books there, and more! There’s a fabulous display up now, too.

👠 Devil Wears Prada fans — eat your heart out.

We’ve got our very own fashionista extraordinaire… but unlike Miranda P, she insists you learn to make it yourself. (Fun fact: Melanie makes almost every outfit you see her in. She’s amazing!)

With a little inspiration from Melanie’s book picks and the help of our MakerSpace equipment, you can easily dive into sewing, fashion design, mending, and upcycling.

Style, creativity, and a library card! Star combo.

We can’t wait to learn what books shaped LM Montgomery’s writing of some of the most beloved books ever. Lucy was a self proclaimed “book drunkard”. We’re gonna have a ton of fun learning more with Emily Woster, a Montgomery scholar, during this presentation you can join from comfort of your sofa.
