🌒 I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman

We read I Who Have Never Known Men for our book club, and it left all of us deeply moved and strangely quiet.

At the center of this dystopian novel is a girl with no name, who has lived her entire life in captivity with thirty-nine other women. None of them know why they are imprisoned, who their guards are, or what lies beyond the cage that confines them. When they are suddenly freed, they find themselves in a vast, empty landscape, a world where civilization seems to have disappeared.

What follows is less a story of survival and more a haunting exploration of existence, identity, and loneliness. The girl, who has never known men, love, or freedom, becomes a vessel for reflection, a figure untouched by society yet longing to understand what it means to be human.

Our discussion around this book was one of the most thought-provoking we’ve had. The story left many of us with more questions than answers, leading to deep conversations about what humanity means, how womanhood is defined, and how community and culture shape who we become. Each member saw something different in the story - some found it deeply philosophical, others unsettling or strangely beautiful.

It’s a quiet, haunting piece of dystopian fiction that lingers long after you finish it. It doesn’t offer comfort or clarity, but it invites reflection on isolation, freedom, and what remains of us when everything else is gone.

Average book club rating: 3.3/5

The Very Secret Society of Irregular Witches by Sangu Mandanna

Book Club Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️3.3

This one met expectations for most, but not all. Out of 16 readers, 12 were charmed while 4 weren’t as taken. The story sparked discussions about belonging, acceptance, and community, as well as love between opposites and whether witches might exist among us.

Mika resonated with most, but it was Jamie, Ian, and the children who truly won hearts. We debated whether her romance mattered to the story (most said no), while agreeing the Executor’s role was essential.

For many, Mandanna’s whimsical style made this a light, beautiful read; for others, it didn’t quite land. A cozy story that may not enchant everyone, but still offered plenty of magic and warmth.

Grateful for the enriching perspectives shared by our book club members as we unpacked the complexities of this remarkable narrative. A story that is neither entirely tragic nor perfect, but profoundly human and worth telling.✨

Happy International Women’s Day.
Today, we celebrate the strength, wisdom, and resilience of women everywhere, especially the incredible women writers whose words inspire, challenge, and empower us.
As Maya Angelou said, ‘Each time a woman stands up for herself, without knowing it possibly, without claiming it, she stands up for all women.’
May we continue to uplift each other and amplify women’s voices in literature and beyond. 💜📚 #IWD2025 #WomenWhoWrite #womenwhoread

As a book club, we should probably just accept that 90% of the time, we’ll never reach a consensus on a book or its characters. Case in point: our heated debate around Rootless. Is Sam a good man? The verdict: Sam is the better version of all the male propagandists we’ve read about this year.

But at least we all agreed on one thing, Efe was the true “rootless” one. Despite the lively (and sometimes fiery) discussion, the book earned an impressive average rating of 4/5 ⭐️ , making it the highest-rated read of the year so far.
