Human life comes with prudence, or at least the search for it. With faith, perseverance and manifestation, we move forward. Without, we move backwards. Vivekananda calls it the means to our one end, one aim — success. Tolstoy calls it the 'good way of life' — searching for the meaning of life, with virtue and in company of others' wisdom; in search of our own.

It is one thing to not know better and another to know and not act on it. In fact, most of us struggle with the latter: swinging back and forth between intellectual insight and emotional insight; between our shortcomings and strengths; between knowing and acting. Giving in and sparing ourselves the hassle instead of putting up a fight with our own self. In between this hum and haw, every day becomes a choice and often, we recognise the better one only towards the end of the day; forgeting that wisdom does not always have to be earned. It can be learnt and inspired. Which is why our elders tell us to read better — another one of the things we learn too late.

With that spirit, I had begun my year with small goals; a quiet war with the little things that make or break us. More than half of the year has gone by and I am still forging an illusion of a change. The intent exists; the action, though, is still missing. I have gathered advice — a mix of philosophical, spiritual, practical — and yet, I struggle with applying it.

But isn't that the beauty of a calendar year? It repeats itself so you shall do differently. Make a mistake once and do it better the next time. If not the next, then the third. I say some day, as long as you try every day.

Also in that spirit (and inspired by @writerly_life 's order of maintaining his books by laminating them), I too have starting laminating one book every day. It's only been a week, but it feels satisfying.

Here's to small changes and doing better.

"धीरे धीरे रे मना, धीरे सब कुछ होय"

I do not remember the last time I opened a book and fell into it like I fell into the comfort of Lahiri's words. It is the same comfort that comes with sitting silently in  a loved one's company or reading a gifted book and eating cake that was baked with love.

And perhaps with the braveness she has shown, writing fluently in a language her parents struggled to master; I too have braved to see a subtle reflection of myself in her words.

Reading her feels like one has aged and is ready to open an old diary and revisit the choices and the regrets. She is almost always suspended in an air of familiarity; her words, always homely tasting.

I smile at how simple the purpose of this book was. To see and be seen. Nothing about revolutionary insights. Nothing about plots and twists. Only a familiarity that reminds you of settling deeper into a couch and giving in to slumber.

Tell me this. Have you ever wondered what it would be like if someone was to observe your life as you walk through it alone? To have someone accross a mirror understand what you see and feel? I would be lying if I say I haven't thought about it more than once. Whereabouts is exactly that.

Imagine a woman walking through the city, walking through her life. Middle aged. Alone but mostly not lonely. Trying to perfect the 'condition of solitude'. Her side profile the only face visible to us. Her hair, flipping in the air, catching up with the wind, surrendering to it. Her eyes, lost in a distant thought. Her gaze, accepting. Her face, calm. She knows how we think we give meaning to a place but how, more often than not, it is the ordinary places we visit that define us. Supermarkets, bridges, museums, bookstores, rainy days, old lovers. We belong to them as much as they belong to us.

It could be Lahiri. It could me. It could be you.

Which is what makes it sublime. Making it deeply personal without giving many details. It's a story that belongs to many. A story that one must tell.

Just like she says:

"I am amazed at our impulse to express ourselves, explain ourselves, tell stories to one another"

And Lahiri does all of them well. Express, explain, and tell stories.

Grateful to all the publishers, writers, friends, family who have sent me their love in a packet the last three months.

Thank you to each and every one of you for making my birthday special despite me not wanting to celebrate it. Your roses and cards are pressed tightly between the pages of these books, future reminders of your tenderness.

I will get back to posting regularly now, I hope life is kind to all of us this time. And I hope routine will save me.

See you soon.
Love,
Nandini.

Q: How have you been?
