Thank you Mr B's Emporium! ✨️

I don't know how they do it - this is the second book I've received as part of my Mr B's Emporium subscription and they have found yet another banger! This collection of short stories is absolutely fantastic - dark, seductive, chaotic, twisted, dazzling, consuming. I've loved every story, and there are plots that are so well thought out and provoking.

Anyone out there who enjoys a macabre short story, give this a read! #thedangersofsmokinginbed

Here's a photo of me reading a book, and a slightly unrelated list of the #LastBookI...

Bought - Astra by Naomi Foyle - it's rare I read sci fi / fantasy / dystopia, but I bought this after seeing an amazing puppet show adaptation at the Brighton Fringe (@naomifoylepoet @brightonfringe)

Borrowed - big library fan here - I last physically borrowed Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi and on @BorrowBox (library audio app) I've borrowed It's All In Your Head by Suzanne O'Sullivan

Was gifted - my lovely step-dad recently bought me The End of the Affair by Graham Green, recommended by Carrie on @litfriction

Gave to someone else - I'm always lending out books, most recently my library copy of Open Water to a trusted friend who returned it on time 😉 but the last book I actually bought as a gift was Second Place by Rachel Cusk

Started - Burnt Sugar by Avni Doshi, incredible, uncomfortable prose

Finished - The Appeal by Janice Hallett, which I devoured, it really hit the spot

Gave five stars - I don't really give stars, but I'd say it's a toss up between the Appeal (see above) and Outline by Rachel Cusk

Gave two stars or less - I didn't enjoy Luster by Raven Leilani, so got to be that soz

Didn't finish - Empire of Pain (audiobook) by Patrick Radden Keefe, just got bored, but maybe I'll go back to it

Listened to - Dishonesty is the Second Best Policy by David Mitchell - funny often political chat
.
Thanks for the tag @whatireadnext, join in if you fancy, I'll tag some pals ⭐
.
Interested to hear your thoughts on any of the above or pictured books

#booksonemptybenches meets #maywrapup

There’s an inherent romanticism to the idea of books on empty benches and I love this tag created by @ashish_the_reader
So, while here’s a pile of the physical books I read in may, the whole list goes something like this -

Chokher Bali
By the sea
The fat lady sings(audio)
Gold diggers
Sister of my heart
The vine of desire(audio)
Sparks like stars
Companion piece(audio)

I am carrying sparks like stars to June and hoping for it to pick up pace and become more interesting. I am sure it’s me and not the book because my buddy readers @thebookishtales and @thesacredwhispers both loved the book. Will talk more about it when I finish it.

How was your May?
Tagging a few for the bookish challenge.

💟🎀 Stack For a Cause 🎀💟 (Flocked by pink heart and bow emojis)⠀
⠀
#OnWednesdaysWeWearPink #WeAlwaysSupportCauses⠀
⠀
I was tagged by the unbelievably wonderful @aminasbookshelf to do a stack for a cause I firmly believe in. ⠀
⠀
Abortion access for all isn't a conversation or debate - it has to exist in all parameters and making it illegal doesn't get rid of abortions but only limits the safe access for those that are poorer, in more desperate situations and already struggle with healthcare access. ⠀
⠀
The Bookstagrammer @pocketsized_pageturner is using the hashtag #StackForReproductiveRights to raise money through 31st May to raise funds to donate to⠀
@brigidalliance @wrrapreprojustice @nationalabortionfederation ⠀
⠀
In my own support of this cause, I am donating $15 (11 books in my stack + Amina's 4) to @arc_southeast which funds reproductive services including abortions in the Southeast: Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, Georgia (my home state 🍑), Florida and South Carolina. ⠀
⠀
I will tag a few friends, but please feel free to do your own pinkish stack. In honour of non-binary and trans individuals who might also need abortion access, I ask that you tag me and let me know about your #StackForReproductiveRights⠀
⠀
Those books will be added to my donation total. ⠀
⠀
Books in my stack include: ⠀
• A Marvelous Light by Freya Marske
• This is Not a Pity Memoir by Abi Morgan⠀
• Good Morning, Destroyer of Men's Souls by Nina Renata Aron⠀
• To Love and To Loathe by Martha Waters⠀
• Detransition, Baby by Torrey Peters⠀
• Love is an Ex-Country by Randa Jarrar⠀
• Milkman by Anna Burns⠀
• Your Silence Will Not Protect You by Audre Lorde⠀
• Kitchen by Banana Yoshimoto⠀
• Set on You by Amy Lea⠀
• She Gets the Girl by Rachael Lippincott and Alyson Derrick⠀
⠀⠀

𝗦𝗶𝘅 𝗼𝗻 𝗦𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗮𝘆 📚

𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒏𝒔𝒍𝒂𝒕𝒆𝒅 𝑭𝒊𝒄𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏 𝑬𝒅𝒊𝒕𝒊𝒐𝒏

I'm back with a #sundayshoutoutstack - now shamelessly copying @inkdrinkerreads format: six books six accounts.

And today I'm featuring some great translated fiction and accounts that champion books in translation!

𝑻𝒉𝒆 𝑺𝒕𝒂𝒄𝒌

🇹🇭 𝗕𝗿𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 by Duanwad Pimwana translated by Mui Poopoksakul

In a poor community, a boy abandoned by his family is adopted by his neighbours. Social realism, coming-of-page, a story in vignettes.

🇱🇧 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗸𝗮𝗻𝗱 by Amin Maalouf translated by Russell Harris

"At the bottom of the Atlantic there is a book. I am going to tell you its history."

A brilliant historical fiction novel revolving around the 11th century Persian poet Omar Khayyám.

🇲🇽 𝗦𝘂𝗱𝗱𝗲𝗻 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝘆 Álvaro Enrigue translated by Natasha Wimmer

Anne Boleyn's hair. A brutal game of tennis between Caravaggio and Quevedo. La Malinche. This is book is one of a kind.

🇨🇴 𝗖𝗵𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗹𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝗗𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵 𝗙𝗼𝗿𝗲𝘁𝗼𝗹𝗱 by Gabriel García Márquez translated by Gregory Rabassa

"On the day they were going to kill him..."

Gabo's murder mystery and a near perfect novella.

🇮🇹 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗥𝗼𝘀𝗲 by Umberto Eco translated by William Weaver

Speaking of murder mysteries, a detective novel about murderous monks. Almost too brilliant for its own good.

🇹🇭 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗦𝗮𝗱 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗪𝗮𝘀 by Prabda Yoon translated by Mui Poopoksakul

Postmodern short stories from one of Thailand's greatest writers.

🗯️ @end.notes
I've already done a shoutout for Lauren, but can hardly leave her off a list of #translatedlit enthusiasts!

#nathicore is…

goosebumps, visceral reactions to songs, books, films, photos, places, memories - anything containing heart, whole or broken.

Overwhelmingly feeling too much - all.the.time.

Zero tolerance for hypocrisy, sexism and dubbed films.

Eternal nostalgia. Remembering and being achingly attached to memories.

Being passionate about passion and looking for it in every corner.

Paradoxes. Loving the sun but hating the heat.

It is the certainty that yoga and psychoanalysis could save the world.

Preferring animals to people and being perpetually frustrated by not being able to protect them from all evil.

Fear and anxiety as a second skin.

A love for words, a need to collect them.

Swings and slides.

Exchanging 20 min voice messages but refusing to call.

Addiction as a personality trait.

Lone travels. Finding friends in the most random ways and places. Having a heart split into different continents.

It is rejecting easy answers and absolute truths.

Insatiable hunger for knowledge and connection. Believing art to explain and anticipate reality.

Lack of limits and self control.

Saying a phrase in a language not intended without even realizing. Never being able to express myself with only one language.

Finding beauty in rootlessness in a world that praises labels and conformity. Accepting the inherent state of incompleteness, while still endlessly searching for meaning.

Solitude as a natural habitat. Feeling most at peace underwater, swimming, present at last.

Perfectly ripe avocados and brunches and strong coffee with oat milk.

Reading multiple books at once that have no apparent connection to one another and noticing how perfectly well your subconscious matched them.

It is living for the synchronicities.

Rabbit holes of connections to brilliant minds.

An obsession with quotes and feeling seen through someone else’s words, while never trusting my own words to say anything real.

Restelessness.

Comfort in discomfort - seeking the new and unknown. A desperate search for authenticity.

Traveling as a necessity, a means of survival and growth.

It is Bergman and Wong Kar-Wai.

.
An evergrowing chaos that makes me alive.

The charm of stories told through letters is unmatched.
Presenting my pile of epistolary books. I have a few more on my kindle, so, couldn’t photograph them here😊. The colour purple and Ella minnow pea are two such beautiful titles that I can recall.
The belonging is partially epistolary.
✨
Let me know if you love epistolary books too. Tagging a few to showcase their collection 😊

Well, I loved Oliver Sacks - His Own Life. It was a moving, fascinating documentary that kept me interested the whole way though. I’d recommend it to anyone with an interest in human nature, psychology & science in general. If you’re familiar with Oliver Sacks through his work and writing (or maybe the film Awakenings?!) I think it will give you a deeper insight into his life and the complexities of his story. If you’ve not heard of him I think it would make a great introduction and it might well send you down a rabbit hole, reading his books and finding out more about him. It really brought home to me how film & print can work together & complement each other.
.
Obviously, I cried. The incredible affecting music didn’t help! Oliver’s professional life as a neurologist and writer is just so interesting and finding out about his personal life added new layers and had me thinking about how his blend of scientific reasoning and deep empathy developed and influenced his thinking. His relationship with his family, his feelings about his sexuality and his experiences with drugs were so interlinked and in turn had influence on his scientific journey. What shines through all the footage of him is his empathy, care and understanding. And also his blunt honesty and sense of humour 😅 There are some emotional moments - and also some, ‘wow did I hear that right?!’ more shocking moments too.

Film review - Oliver Sacks: His Own Life🍿🧠

AD-PR PRODUCT

I learnt about oliver sacks from reading his (probably) most famous book, “the man who mistook his wife for a hat” & i absolutely loved it! his writing was humourous but sensitive and anyway, that’s not what i’m here for😂 when i saw this watchalong on the tandem newsletter, i HADD to apply!! as a psychology student, i find his work really interesting and was looking forward to learning more about this man as an individual & his life.

oliver sacks is an incredibly interesting person. the way he treats his patients is so lovely. he’s very sensitive and empathetic and patient.

suprisingly, this soft-spoken, intelligent, inspiring man has a very brutally honest and unexpectedly funny sense of humour which i found hilarious.

i’d reccomend this film to anyone who’s heard of or read anything of oliver sacks or those who have an interest in neuroscience & neuropsychology.
