An evening with Hanna Nordenhök.

A huge thank you to @hannanordenhok for joining us in Newcastle tonight to talk all things Wonderland - lies and deception, truth and fiction, shifting identities, translation and plenty more besides.

Thanks to @pressheloise for the opportunity, to @deepnorthuk for welcoming us into their Ouseburn space, and most importantly to everyone who came along, asked questions and supported another evening of international literature in Newcastle. Despite the weather!

We recorded tonight’s conversation, so if you couldn’t make it along, we’ll be making the session available to listen back to very soon.

And if you’d like to pick up the book, there are a few signed copies of Wonderland remaining which I’ll have with me @thefindouseburn this weekend.

Thanks again to everyone who joined us. Another Crossing Borders complete!

NOW READING

Some behind the scenes from the Inpress office today, with a fresh proof just in and one to look out for at the end of October.

The Skull by French-Algerian writer @xaviercharlesleclerc, translated by Helen Stevenson and published by @hoperoadpublishing under its Small Axes imprint, is a short, powerful blend of history, memoir and fiction.

Given access to the vaults of Paris’s Musée de l’Homme, Le Clerc encounters the skull of a seven-year-old Algerian girl, kept in a simple box, whom he imagines as Zohra. From there, the text moves between her story, his own life and family, and the brutal history of French colonial rule in Algeria.

Speaking as if directly to Zohra, this is a deeply personal, at times angry, and beautifully written work.

And a familiar name on the translation: @helenmstevenson also brought Vincent Delecroix’s Small Boat into English, which we were very pleased to explore with her as part of our Crossing Borders series last year.

The Skull lands with all good bookshops at the end of October.

Time to wrap up the women-in-translation August readathon. I read 8 books in total, completing prompts offered by @adelicatereader in collaboration with @readwit under #witpassport.

The books took me to Türkiye, Ecuador, Thailand, Japan, Argentina, Suriname and… somewhere in space. Because of my trip to Istanbul I switched spontaneously from reading Natalia Ginzburg to Tezer Özlü.

The best two books were definitely “Electric Shamans at the Festival of the Sun” by Mónica Ojeda - an explosion of emotions, music, father-daughter relationship and shamanistic mysticism, and “Cold Nights of Childhood” by Tezer Özlü. I fell in love with immense desire to live and love by Özlü’s young female protagonist and her descriptions of life in Ankara and Istanbul of the 1950s and 1960s. The worst was “Arid Dreams” by Duanwad Pimwana. The male gaze and objectification of women by horrible male protagonists was shocking to read, especially as the author is a woman.

📚 How did women-in-translation August go for you?

Here's everything I read for women-in-translation month—and oh, what a wonderful, dizzying, breathtaking ride it was. Let me sit for a while with everything I've read. Maybe I'll write about it in a day or two, but in the meantime, swipe to see the books.

There's one thing I can say for certain: reading women in translation isn't going to be a yearly thing that happens only in August for me. I'll most likely be reading them regularly alongside my other books.

We’re coming to the end of another Women in Translation Month, can you believe it?!

All this month we’ve been sharing some of the brilliant new books by women in translation arriving on shelves this August, but it felt only right to dig into the archives too and celebrate a few favourites from years gone by.

Here is just a small slice of the international books pulled from my own collection at Opt Indie HQ: different languages, different countries, different publishers, and plenty of old favourites alongside fresh releases.

Because, just as books aren’t only for Christmas, reading women in translation shouldn’t be just for August.

Hopefully this month has inspired you to read a little more widely. If so, we’ll be joining @upmarket_uk at @gosforthcentral all day tomorrow, with plenty of recent discoveries to take your reading across borders and well beyond the end of Women in Translation Month.

Come and have a browse, talk books and find something new!
