Corey’s trip to Oliver’s Library 🚂📖

As Oliver mentioned the other day, I’m working in Cardiff for the next few weeks and staying with him. This means I finally get my hands on certain books I’ve been eager to read for years. (This man keeps his books close to his chest, so taking them back to London is not an option 😅)

Here’s the hopeful 6 I have planned:

- Speak Gigantular by Irenosen Okojie
- The Foghorn Echoes by Danny Ramadan
- Speak No Evil by Uzodinma Iweala
- Ghost Roots by ‘Pemi Aguda
- Harriet Tubman: Live in Concert by Bob the Drag Queen
- Nova Scotia House by Charlie Porter

*DISCLAIMER* these are all books Oliver has loved over the years and constantly raves about!

Where should I start as time is precious? ⏰

This year’s #bhm theme is honouring our communities, so here are a few people, organisations and books clubs who I consider to be part of my bookish community, from those that have helped me to formulate the thoughts and ideas that often make it into my videos, creators I admire and aspire to be like, to cool things and people you should just know about (if yvou don’t already!)

This is by no means an expansive list so if there are other people in the Black British Bookish community that aren’t already on the list please tag them below 🙂

The Battle of The Covers

These 2 covers are my absolute favourite book covers. Both authors did a good job. Kudos to Lola Akinmade (@lolaakinmade ) who is such an impressive author and Bolu Babalola (@boluberry ) (author of Honey & Spice, Sweet Heat).

Both naijas 🇳🇬 living in Europe. Lola lived 4 hours away and is the author I'd most like to be one day. She is so productive! More than 5 published books, see her doing book tours in the US, UK, SA, is a photographer, in charge of a famous Stockholm book tour, speaks Swedish and more.

Which cover is your favourite? I can't choose.

What an unforgettable weekend at the Black British Book Festival. 💫

One of the greatest rewards of building a portfolio career, and cultivating a community like Career Sistas, is the inspiring, dynamic rooms we get to step into. It is a constant reminder that when we build our own tables, the space simply expands for everyone.

A few standout moments and takeaways from #bbbf26:

🎙️ Community in Motion: Connecting with fellow members of the Black Writers’ Guild to trade notes on podcasting, platform building, and creative longevity. Along with meeting several new faces. (Swipe to see a favourite moment meeting the brilliant, incredibly funny and amazing @thecultofcocoo 🥰)

👑 Honouring the Pioneers: Sitting in awe as veteran Black female publishers shared journeys spanning decades. Their dedication paved the path for our voices to be heard, valued, and preserved for posterity.

🎶 Joy as Resistance: The pure warmth and nostalgia of listening to Corinne Bailey Rae speak about her intergenerational children’s book, Put Your Records On.

💡 The Digital Craft: A candid masterclass on showing up online with authenticity:

• Your perspective is unique. Own it.
• Always anchor back to your why.
• Do not lose the joy along the way.

The quote that captured the heart of the entire weekend for me came from Paige Lewin, author of “How to Love Your Afro” and who was also wearing that most incredible green dress (swipe to see)
“It does not need to be perfect, it just needs to exist.” ✨

A timely reminder for every author, leader, and creator in our community: stop waiting for conditions to be flawless before you bring your voice into the room. Let your work exist. 🤎

What is one idea or project you are giving yourself permission to put out into the world this week? Let us know below! 👇🏾

I started writing in 2013, it's my passion, purpose and I will be a published author in Kenya very soon. (Follow me @authornimakingi to help pick book titles, covers etc)

My immediate 3 books percolating: a short devotional with a publisher, a collection of 12 short stories (story 1 was delivered yesterday from the US & is AMAZING) and an "Americanah" kind of novel; first page not yet typed. Ha ha ha!

I've been procrastinating seriously; buying books, Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and investigating new joints in Nakuru. But the fun ends this month. Wish me luck W.R.I.T.I.N.G #writersofinstagram #booksofinstagram 📚✒✒🖊📥📆
