The quit-your-job founder story gets all the attention. But almost half of founders built #startups on the side first. Your #9to5 is the R&D lab, the funding, and sometimes where you meet your co-founder.

And before you commit years to that co-founder, spend one weekend with them at a #hackathon.

Pick one, show up with your maybe-co-founder, and find out in one weekend what would otherwise take you a year.

We tagged our favorite hackathons across Canada and the US in this post, check them out.

Read the full article (link in the bio) for more details: how to spot the right problem inside your job, validate with real revenue, and know exactly when to leap.

One of my favorite things about my job is meeting developers. They really are the ones deadlifting our industry and despite all its ups and downs they keep building innovative things, laying the groundwork for the future.

We won 🏆 at @awe.xr 𝘅 @specs 𝘅 @realityhackatmit !! 🤩
Winning at this hackathon for the second time feels like such a blessing ✨🥹

💭𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘆
This idea has been in my mind for quite some time. When I studied organic chemistry, I had created a desktop app to help students learn visually. But chemistry still often feels too abstract and disconnected from the real world.
This time, I wanted to explore how 𝗔𝗥 𝗰𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗺𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘆 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹, 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝘆𝗳𝘂𝗹, 𝘀𝗽𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲.

I’m so grateful I got to build this with my amazing teammates @krazyykrunal and @anothervivek 🥰

Creating this project in just 𝟮 𝘄𝗲𝗲𝗸𝘀 alongside our full-time jobs was no small feat. We were basically not sleeping for two weeks 🤣 but it was so worth it.

💡𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮
We created 𝗔𝘁𝗼𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀, an 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗔𝗥 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗲𝗻𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 that helps people learn organic chemistry through story, interaction, and spatial visuals.
Our goal was to make chemistry feel 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲, 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗰𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, especially for neurodivergent learners.

We did both online research and interviews with people with 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗦𝘆𝗻𝗱𝗿𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝗔𝘂𝘁𝗶𝘀𝗺, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗔𝗗𝗛𝗗, and built the app around those insights.

Those insights shaped the entire experience, from the 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝘆𝗹𝗲, 𝘀𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗱𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻, 𝗮𝗻𝗶𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗹𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗹 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝘂𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲.

Instead of memorising abstract chemistry concepts, users help 🍕𝗣𝗶𝗽 , a cute alien from Pizza Planet, collect atoms and build fuel to get back home 🚀

Reality Hack was live at AWE USA 2026. Accepted teams have gathered at the Long Beach Convention Center for their final in-person hack day.

Organized alongside Reality Hack at MIT and Spectacles, this hackathon challenges participants to build under this year's banner: "I, Spatial: Humans Empowered by Spatial AI." Teams are using Spectacles to build next-generation tools that enhance how we learn while keeping human capability at the center.

The momentum continues tomorrow, June 16, when participants demo their work on the AWE Expo floor. The final evaluations will culminate on the AWE Main Stage, where prizes will be presented to the top 3 teams.

We look forward to celebrating the winners on the main stage tomorrow.
