POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

This is about a lot more than a pull quote.

My first Cinephile Mike pull quote on a Blu-ray.

But seeing my name on this release hits differently because of who is on the other side of it: Irvine Welsh.

Trainspotting was a book I loved and a film I saw at a formative age — one that changed the way I watched movies. Along with A Clockwork Orange, it was part of the experience that made me start looking at film differently.

Years later, I found myself at the Edinburgh International Film Festival interviewing Irvine Welsh about a documentary.

And now, the words I wrote about that film are on its physical release.

That's more than a pull quote. That's a full-circle moment.

And the timing couldn't be better, because I'm getting ready to head back to EIFF.

Sometimes you really do have to stop and appreciate how far the journey has taken you. 🎬

See you soon, Edinburgh.

TRAINSPOTTING IS 30: When Irvine Welsh wrote Trainspotting he unleashed a lightning bolt of a novel that struck the mainstream and redefined British culture. When that vision hit the big screen, courtesy of Director Danny Boyle in ‘96, it changed cinema forever.

Fast forward to last August, and we got to play a small part in that story when LS Films released our first original feature documentary, Irvine Welsh: Reality Is Not Enough, which had the honor of closing the Edinburgh International Film Festival. Directed by Paul Sng, Reality is Not Enough slowly reveals both the inner world and outer life of Welsh, touching on the genius and lived experiences of a man who has created some of the most iconic characters in British literary history and is widely regarded as one of the most original and controversial writers of our times.

This captivating piece of autobiographical filmmaking combines intimate observational footage, rare archive film clips and readings from his novels narrated by Liam Neeson (Batman Begins, Star Wars), Maxine Peake (The Theory of Everything, Shameless) and more.

Essential viewing for any Trainspotting fan:

Stream it on all major platforms.
Own it on DVD and Blu-ray.

One of my fave parts of making a film is the privilege of showing it to an audience and hearing what they think of it. You learn so much from listening to what the film made others feel and think about. On Reality Is Not Enough, I realised that beyond Irvine, it’s a film about impermanence, how our time is limited and how what you leave behind is less important than what you get to do and experience with others while you’re here.

Following our World Premiere @edfilmfest we were blessed to have the experience of taking the film on the road for 9 Q&As and very grateful to everyone who came out to see the film in a cinema. I’d also like to thank our brilliant Q&A hosts and the staff at each venue:

Three years ago I got a call from @paulsng1 saying he’d like me to shoot a doc with him. Before I know it I’m in a dive bar in Miami with one of my favourite authors whose books I grew up on; the boss man @irvine.welsh. And so it goes, one day you’re sitting in your PJs wondering when you’re finally gonna get a good gig, next minute you’re working your dream job. It’s a tough industry and it’s been a tougher year for a lot of us. But if you really want something, keep pushing for it and eventually someone like Paul will come along and give you a shot.

I truly cannot recommend seeing this extraordinary documentary highly enough. I watched it yesterday with my brother, and he’s already planning to go back for a second viewing—which tells you just how powerful it is.
This film is so much more than a documentary. It’s thought-provoking, hilariously sharp, deeply inspiring, heartwarming, and bursting with cosmic energy. It stirred something in me that’s hard to put into words—a sense of urgency, of possibility, of waking up. I left the theater feeling electrified, like I had to make a choice: to really live. To choose life. Because reality as we know it? Sometimes, it’s just not enough.
I always knew @paulsn1 was an exceptional director. But now, having experienced this masterpiece, I truly understand why. His vision, execution, and emotional depth are on another level entirely.
Exceptional. 👏🏿
