I’ve quit my newsletter more times than I’d like to admit. But I’m back!

I first started a Substack in 2022, but could never find the right voice. The thing I do, writing about flying in the cockpit over the Himalayas …or interviewing a close-knit community in a Kansas town…or my first-hand experience in Taipei for Pride, felt too scattered.

How do you build a newsletter around someone who refuses to stay in one travel lane? What was my niche? A few years into full-time freelancing, I finally get it now: the range *is* the point, and what connects it all is…me.

I’m curious about everywhere, from the luxury to the no-frills, always trying to tell someone what it was really like. And I love the intricacies of travel (including logistics) more than most.

So that’s what this newsletter actually is now. It’s a behind-the-scenes of my strange yet wonderful job. My latest post? A look at how I actually make a living out here, plus 73,692 miles flown so far into 2026 and one very good dog. 🐶

“Checking In” is at my link in bio. What do you want me to dig into next? 👇

In the United States, depending on the region, summer break is approximately two to three months, with students typically finishing the school year in late May or early June and starting the new year in mid-late August or early September.

The modern school calendar has its roots in 19th-century school-reform movements seeking standardization between urban and rural areas. Up until the mid-19th century, most schools were open for a winter and summer term. As individual schools merged into school districts and bureaucracies emerged to manage the newly formed school districts, school leaders and politicians identified a need to standardize calendars across regions. This standardization was related to the emerging tax structures, laws around compulsory education, as well as a general sentiment that school should be an essential component of American childhood.

Additionally, many school leaders advocated for breaks so that students and teachers could rest their brains. Many 19th- and early 20th-century Americans educators believed that too much learning in hot weather was bad for one’s health and could result in heat exhaustion and injury, particularly for younger children, whose minds were still developing. The extended summer break was seen as a way for children and their teachers to rest and recover.

While the origins of the summer holiday break are often believed to be rooted in agriculture and the idea children were needed to assist with planting and harvesting crops, this is inaccurate. Most crops were planted in the spring and harvested in the fall.

2024 was about putting down roots.

Surprisingly, in a year of seemingly nonstop travel, I still managed to feel a sense of community—both at home and on trips around the world. And I’m grateful.

2024 was my first full calendar year as a full-time freelancer. I somehow weasled my way to some once-in-a-lifetime experiences, while also deepening connections and doing something I truly love—sharing the joys of travel.
