The JTab tour today. 3 of my 4 Client based stops supporting my peeps!

1) Mr Lawyer, Zach Lynch with his first published book! Signing was at Barnes and Noble, Warwick. Yo say I'm fucming proud of this young man is am understatement. Keep shining bright, my friend! There is a signed copy at JTab for any client that wants to borrow it and read.

2) Didn't get any pics but celebrated Joyce's 70th birthday with many more JTab people's.

3) Rebecca's artwork display opening night at AS220. As you can see, she's pretty fucking talented. Go check out her art page and support her work!

4) Julie and her hubby Danny (client of Neil's at JTab) put on yet another amazing show. Such great local music! Thanks, y'all!! Good people doing good things!

O, Beautiful | Rebecca Macri

The inception of this body of work was seeing pickup trucks flying giant American flags. It felt like aggressive shorthand for white nationalism. Since when did the racists get to claim this symbol of our country? It bothered me.

I started thinking about how to reclaim the American flag, to extricate it from hypermasculine, aggressive associations. I began making small multimedia and painted flags on paper. Branching out from red, white, and blue into a full spectrum of colors, I imagined a kinder, gentler country that recognizes and celebrates diversity of all types. From there, I brainstormed other symbols that could be similarly re-imagined, including the bald eagle, the divine eye of providence (from the back of the dollar bill), and the Statue of Liberty.

For this show, I was drawn to making textile pieces for several reasons. First, textiles represent softness and comfort. They feel inherently feminine to me because of their history as “women’s work”. Second, there’s an abundance of second-hand yarn and fabric. Thrifting and recycling is one small way I can reduce consumption and environmental impact. Third, there’s a meditative peace when working with tactile materials that’s an antidote to overwhelm and despair.

The “O, Beautiful” paintings are abstracted landscapes loosely based on geometric patterns found in cultures throughout history. I didn’t want to reference any specific culture that wasn’t mine to reference. But I did want to pick up some of the threads that connect us as humans - the impulse to beautify our surroundings and experience deep connection with nature.

As America turns 250 years old, I recognize the darkness we are facing. Our country has been usurped by war criminals and grifters. Life has gotten harder in so many ways. Unfortunately I can’t impeach anybody, but I can work every day to build joy and connection and beauty - the things that make life worth living and are worth fighting for.

I will never take a picture that truly captures the vibrancy and texture of this gorgeous piece by @rebeccamacriart! And I need to cut the mat bought for it so it’s not covering a single centimeter! But I was so excited to put it on my wall, that I couldn’t wait. This piece is art I’d love to own even without the story behind it, but the story makes it all the more special. I grew up in Somers with Rebecca’s husband (who is a friend, a lovely human being, and one of my fond memories of childhood), and have been following her art for a long time. She created this piece while listening to the audiobook of Home of the American Circus read by @justjuliawhelan (which takes place in Somers) and titled it ‘Cradle of the American Circus’ (which is the technical title of Somers). So of course, I had to have it. What an honor to get to live with art from an artist I admire that has such a beautiful connection to my own work! Thank you so much for making this gorgeous piece, Rebecca. The mix of color and texture and sparkle, lightness and dark, feels like an appropriate mirror to life. I love it so much.
