POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

June 4 2016 …. 10 Years Ago Today!!!! This spontaneous photo was taken, ( just 3 months after getting my flat closure surgery and fighting sepsis) I got together with 3 beautiful women….3 women,so different and so supportive, who guided me through my new body. I painted Mel , Sarah and Rebecca and we went to Central Park to take some selfies. This was pure joy ( nothing performative) we had no idea the experience we were having and the experience that those who all of a sudden appeared and clapped for us .. lots of laughs and lots of tears . We had no intention or idea this photo would go viral…and opportunities for advocacy that were not imagined… we only knew it as “ going flat”.. but soon after other women with vim and vigor got it termed “aesthetic flat closure “… and is now a viable option for women newly diagnosed with Breast Cancer!! This is the ultimate SCARS to STARs 😉🥰 thank you ladies ! You all helped me more than you will ever know! ❤️

This past weekend at @the_breasties I met a whole new group of young women who have chose #aestheticflatclosure ( a viable choice now recognized … was always available, but not with added photos of powerful beauty-filled women) and this weekend an amazing group are gathering in Colorado… Standing Flat love to you all @flatclosurenow @flatretreat @fierceflatforward ❤️

THE BREAST AND THE SEA…

Words by Rebecca Pine @rebeccapine
Snippet from @wildfire_bc_magazine

One brisk autumn day, I stood beside the sea, feet sprinkled with sand. I was often drawn to the sea as I sorted out my recent cancer diagnosis and the immediate and long-term ramifications of the decisions that needed to be made. Seeking some semblance of peace, I combed the shore, watched the waves rise and fall, and listened to the calls of the shore birds. On this particularly sunny afternoon I felt the water beckoning and yearned to be supported by its buoyancy—as carefree as I had been before the weight of my diagnosis.

Throwing caution to the wind, I quickly stripped off my outer garments. The icy waves lapped around my ankles and the chill in the air caused me to second guess my decision. Trepidation gave way to determination as I stepped forward, wading deeper into the sea. After submerging, I bobbed effortlessly with the rhythm of each cresting wave. A feeling of ease washed over me as I took in the unending bright, blue sky, the billowy clouds, and the vastness of the ocean all around. I felt fully alive, free, and ready in that moment to face the challenges I had left behind on the shore.

“I’m much stronger than I was before losing my mom. I’d trade it back in a heartbeat, but I have a strength that’s not like any other I’ve experienced in my life.” - Rebecca, mother loss 9 years ago @rebeccapine

“Being in nature soothed my soul and helped me to feel connected to something larger than myself. It made me feel that I would be ok despite the uncertainties looming before me. Writing was another powerful way of processing. It would help me release thoughts, fears, and worries rolling around in my mind, and helped me to find clarity and peace with the many difficult decisions that needed to be made. These were my lifelines.

Most people in my life had not been through the experience of cancer, and I needed to find a balance between sharing my feelings and experiences with others and making time to support myself in whatever ways I most needed to. I had people who loved me and were there for me, but it is invaluable to have someone on your side who knows what you're going through because they've been there. My mother was that person for me. I talked to her every day. Her circumstances and age at diagnosis were different. She was incredibly supportive, but had strong opinions about what I should or shouldn't do, that differed from my own views. That was hard at times. I am blessed to have had the gift of her unconditional love and support in my life. It was not until I began preparing for my preventative surgeries years later (and after the loss of my mom) that I began making friends with others my age who had also been through breast cancer. These friendships have been invaluable, and have also allowed me to give back by supporting them through their struggles.” - @rebeccapine
