Last week was wild. As in, wildly exciting and fun and affirming. As in, isn’t it wild that being with these creative, generous people can be so joyous? Isn’t it wild that creating together is how we win? And, isn’t wilderness-beaver dams, woodpeckers, flame salamanders, toads oh my- just wow? 🦫 honored to be part of Anna-Marie McLemore’s book launch for their incredible 1920s queer gothic novel WE COULD BE ANYTHING. Then saw A-M again in Princeton with @anicarissi and @burnsamyjo (serendipity!) good times, as Pride rolls on.

It’s all about COMMUNITY and I have found mine. I only knew one person when I came to the @boydsmills Asian Voices Retreat for the first time two years ago but now it’s just a camp for great friends, who all happen to be amazingly talented authors that are killing it in the kid lit industry. And the few new folks we had melded right in into this AAPI BFF stew. Everyone here inspires me and cracks me up and pushes me to do my best work. They are the wind beneath my Korean human arms, blowing away the ticks. And scaring away the beavers with my human scent.

Every year I return from the @boydsmills Asian & Asian American Voices Retreat feeling so inspired. Thanks @debbi_michiko_florence and @pacylin for hosting the best time filled with laughter, joy, and lots of jeong 🩷

Plus we hiked to see a beaver dam and that was really cool

𝟯 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗜 𝗔𝗟𝗪𝗔𝗬𝗦 𝗥𝗘𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗠𝗘𝗡𝗗: Listen for the Lie, Finlay Donovan is Killing It, The Other Side of Now — consider this your official peer pressure.
𝟮 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞𝗦 𝗜 𝗝𝗨𝗦𝗧 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗: A Curious Kind of Magic, Death at the Door — both gave me feelings I wasn’t emotionally prepared for.
𝟭 𝗕𝗢𝗢𝗞 𝗜’𝗠 𝗖𝗨𝗥𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗧𝗟𝗬 𝗥𝗘𝗔𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: Never Ever After — and honestly, it’s my entire weekend plan. No regrets.

Anyway, I’ve clearly proven I have the self-control of a kid in a bookstore. 🙃

Books with Strange, Magical or Haunted Forests!🌲🪾🌳

{•} I’ve been listening to the Over the Garden Wall soundtrack lately, and while it’s been making me miss the fall, it’s also made me realize how often the woods are utilized as a theme in books. Whether they’re spooky and unnerving, or magical and wonders, or maybe even strange, making the characters curious. I think it’s a trope that authors can do a lot with, and while a lot of the books with this trope have the same energy to them, they’re all wildly unique!

For the Wolf is such an underrated on this list! Without too many spoilers, it goes against what everyone expects it to be, especially the main character! I love that it twists everyone’s expectations!

It's my birthday, which means it's time to reflect on how busy I've been this past year (/pos)

⭐️

In between furiously drafting what I thought was the last book of the Dark Gods (which is now the last TWO books, oops) and drafting WE SHALL BE MONSTERS 2, I've been traveling. Whether it's book tour, writing workshops, retreats, D&D meetups, weddings, or Disney World, I've truly done it all. (And had amazing food along the way, ofc)

Not only am I super grateful to get go have these experiences in the first place, but I'm enormously grateful for the people I get to have these experiences with. I can't properly express how much my friends and family mean to me because I'd have to hide in a dark cave for a while, but just know that I love you and hope we can continue going on adventures forever, even if we're running from fires or exploring back alley shops just in case they have merch of my favorite anime characters.

I hope the next year treats me well, but even if it doesn't I know I have many shoulders to lean on. Thank you all for being in my life 💜

Now excuse me while I go find that dark cave.
