Today’s feature story in The Broadsheet @thebroadsheetdaily is about The Battery — where we are, what we’re learning, and what we’re imagining for the future of this extraordinary public space.

A few thoughts from the conversation here. Full story at the link in bio.

I’ve been spending a lot of time in the gardens, and one of the pleasures has been how much there is to learn: from flowers and the strange ways plants adapt, to new ideas about what beauty in a garden can look like, or how you negotiate public space use with different stakeholders.

Once a month, in the form of a newsletter, I share some of what I’m reading, learning and noticing at The Battery, along with people and ideas I think are worth knowing about.

This post has some few things from September.

If you’d like the next issue of the newsletter in your inbox, subscribe through the link in bio.

Flowers have changed the world. On October 13, we’ll spend a day celebrating them at The Battery. 🌸

The 2026 Battery Gardeners Luncheon begins at 11 AM with a public lecture by David George Haskell, author of How Flowers Made Our World, exploring the extraordinary evolutionary story of flowers and the ways they have shaped the world around us.

At noon, we’ll move into the gardens for cocktails and garden tours, followed by lunch at 1 PM in the tented Bosque Gardens.

This year we’re also delighted to welcome Alex Crowder of Field Studies Flora as our guest floral artist—and to begin a new collaboration with Alex that we look forward to sharing more about soon.

And we’re thrilled to welcome Printemps New York as a partner for this year’s Luncheon.

Tuesday, October 13
11 AM Lecture · Noon Cocktails & Garden Tours · 1 PM Luncheon

Tickets and tables are available at the link in bio. Every ticket supports the gardens, programs, and care that make The Battery flourish.

We were out at the park with the New York Mycological Society @newyorkmyc , planning the October Fungus Festival at The Battery, when we found this — dozens of mushrooms in a near-perfect fairy ring, overnight.

Two days later, they'd opened into umbrellas, revealing the gills where spores are released.

Want to see more? Join us and NYMS on October 11 for the Fungus Festival.

Sincere thanks to all who attended last night (and to the skies for shedding no tears!). @recart and @thebatterynyc team made it all happen with grace and expertise. The film's team were all there to celebrate with me: Ivan Schwartz of @studioeis, Abby Suckle of @culturenow_museumwithoutwalls, camera/sound ace @decembalo, and virtuoso @philippegerbercomposer. Great discussion afterward, most of the audience staying and engaging. By George, we did it! Onward...

A bird walk like no other.

Artist @matthias_garff came to The Battery and led kids and visitors through the park to see his bird sculptures, each one made from found objects collected on the streets of New York.

Look closely: what others pass by, he turns into wings, beaks, feathers and unique, adorable animals with a lot of personality.

The Statue of Liberty isn’t meant to be seen through bars.

Today at Castle Clinton, I stood with my colleagues in government to call for a better balance, one that keeps people safe while preserving the view and accessibility of this space.

Millions come here for that moment, and our neighbors live with it every day. We can keep security in place while preserving what makes this space so special. Thank you @repdangoldman for bringing us together.
