Nila is the yin to my yang. She loves anything that sparkles and glitters whereas I tend towards boring brooklyn hipster neutrals and simplicity. She’s the epitome of a bollywood encyclopedia, can learn a dance routine with her eyes closed while I’m barely able to keep up with the first half of “bole churiya”. She will give you in SVU criminal investigation level detail how a recent dawat went while I can barely remember what was served for dessert.

She is the only new yorker who visits times square REGULARLY.

But for some freakishly bizarre reason I can’t imagine my life without her friendship and her sisterhood. We held each other close as our teen years wore us down. She picked me up every time I fell and helped me heal as I stumbled towards adulthood. She’s been the person I can call for anything at any time.

She helped my mom decorate Kenza’s nursery as I gave birth. She rushed to get the TDAP vaccine without hesitation when I was nervous about visitors seeing Kenza. She made me less afraid to be a mom because she in a lot of ways played mom to me in our friendship. She gave me so much love and comfort that I knew if I could emulate that safety for Kenza, she will be okay.

Nila came into my life because of our families. Her parents made me their own. Salim chachu and Ruma auntie, just like their daughter, loved me fiercely and protected and defended me through so much over the years. On Nila’s wedding day I cried watching my sister begin this new chapter of her life but also remembering her dad say “and now we’ve wedded off both of our girls, you and Nila”.

Nila- may your marriage be filled with so much love, peace, and happiness. May you and Samie bhaiya be the cool in each other’s eyes. May Allah (SWT) give you both strength and guidance as your start this new journey together.

Nila made me this cute little scrapbook over a decade ago. I was supposed to do my half and give it back. Maybe I’ll finish it but maybe I give you an excuse to bug me for the rest of our lives.

(Swipe to see the glow up!)
