Lance Naik Om Prakash, SC(P) hailed from Chikhal village in Kinnaur, Himachal Pradesh. A seasoned commando with 13 years of raw operational experience, he had previously survived a gunshot wound in a 2005 battle. He was affectionately known as "OP" by his squad mates.

In February 2016, his elite unit, 9 Para (Special Forces), was mobilized for a high-stakes hostage rescue operation in the Pampore area of Pulwama, Jammu & Kashmir. Heavily armed terrorists had ambushed a convoy and taken cover inside a massive concrete building, giving them a dangerous defensive advantage over any forces attempting to breach.

On February 21, 2016, the special forces launched their final tactical intervention to systematically clear the building room-by-room. Lance Naik Om Prakash stepped up to serve as the leading scout for his assault team, charging forward through a dark corridor to locate the enemy nests. The moment his squad pushed inside, a group of terrorists hidden on the upper floors unleashed a sudden heavy wave of automatic gunfire, pinning the commandos down in a tight corridor. Realizing his team was trapped in a deadly line of fire, Om Prakash made a split-second tactical choice. He deliberately broke cover and advanced directly toward the flashes to draw all the enemy's bullets away from his team members.

The incoming fire hit him squarely, inflicting fatal and critical gunshot injuries across his body. Even while bleeding heavily and enduring immense physical shock, his commando grit kept him on his feet. He maintained his steady aim, returned a precise stream of fire, and single-handedly shot one terrorist dead. His fierce, head-on distraction completely shattered the enemy's defense. Tragically, the 32-year-old warrior succumbed to his wounds on the battlefield.

A fearless son of the soil who stood like an unshakeable wall in the heights of Pampore. Your unwavering courage to safeguard our borders will live on forever. Rest in glory, warrior.

With utmost respect and honor,

Grenadier Surender Singh hailed from the 17 Grenadiers and served with 29 Rashtriya Rifles. The building behind him in this rare photo is the historic Baba Reshi Shrine in Gulmarg, which his unit was guarding.

In 2002, during Operation Parakram, foreign terrorists were constantly trying to cross the freezing mountain passes of Baramulla under heavy fog to launch surprise strikes.A high-priority radio message alerted his squad to a group of armed militants hiding in a dense jungle stretch nearby. Surender and his combat team immediately moved out into the freezing terrain to flush them out.

As they closed in, the hidden enemy suddenly unleashed a massive wave of automatic fire, trapping the squad in a lethal open kill zone. Surender did not back down. He aggressively broke cover and charged the front line to draw all the bullets away from his team. Returning precise fire, he took down the primary shooters and broke the enemy's momentum. He fought with absolute grit until his final breath, making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty. His fierce stand forced the remaining infiltrators to run, keeping the sacred soil behind him completely safe.

A fearless son of the soil who stood like an unshakeable wall in the snow-capped heights of Gulmarg. Your unwavering courage to safeguard our borders will live on forever. Rest in glory, warrior. With utmost respect and honor,
