Artwork of the week | Recycle Group This week, we spotlight Recycle Group’s Sapient 1 and Sapient 2, 2023, two works from the artists’ Sapient series imagining a future utopian society shaped by artificial intelligence. Constructed from plywood, recycled plastic, polycarbonate, and LED, the works depict crowds of figures inhabiting an imagined digital environment. The scenes suggest a collective society in which familiar structures of authority have been displaced by new forms of technologically enabled governance. Each work functions as an independent composition, while together they form a continuous scene, extending the gathering across both panels and bringing the imagined community more fully into view. The works are currently presented as part of Put the Kettle On at Gazelli Art House New York, on view until October 31. Also coming up at the gallery, join us on October 27 for Brick and Mortar: The Future of the Gallery, a conversation considering the evolving role of physical art spaces and how we experience, encounter, and collect art today. Recycle Group is the artist duo of Andrey Blokhin (b. 1987, Krasnodar) and Georgy Kuznetsov (b. 1985, Stavropol), who reinterpret classical imagery through industrial materials and new technologies to explore contemporary culture and the traces it may leave behind. In ‘Airdrop!’, 2015, the concentric rings of a familiar digital icon emerge from rock and water, resembling the remains of an ancient monument. A sign usually encountered on a screen takes on the scale of the landscape. Presented in ‘Keep Me Updated Your Holiness’ at Gazelli Art House in London, the work forms part of the duo’s broader project ‘Future Archaeology’. Developed following the artists’ expedition to Iceland, the photographic series brings the symbols of everyday digital communication into the natural world. Like contemporary counterparts to the Nazca geoglyphs in Peru, these Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and AirDrop icons face the sky. Recycle Group give them a sacred dimension, imagining them as ironic attempts by humanity to communicate with a higher intelligence. “Put the Kettle On”, Inaugural Exhibition, Chelsea, New York City, NY “Across the exhibition, artists spanning more than six decades explore the ways images shape our understanding of the world. From Harold Cohen’s investigations into abstraction and the rule-based systems that would later underpin AARON – one of the earliest computer programs designed to produce paintings and drawings autonomously – to Pauline Boty, Derek Boshier, and Jann Haworth’s examinations of mass media and visual culture, the exhibition traces a lineage of artists who have continually challenged the conventions of representation. A distinct strand within the exhibition revisits the legacy of post-war American abstraction through Lilly Fenichel, whose lyrical, gestural paintings extend the language of Abstract Expressionism while anticipating later developments in color, form and spatial perception. Contemporary perspectives are brought into the exhibition through Memo Akten, Brendan Dawes, Jake Elwes and Recycle Group, whose use of artificial intelligence, algorithms and digital networks expands traditional ideas of authorship, perception and image-making. Agil Abdullayev and Kalliopi Lemos, meanwhile, explore memory, identity and displacement through distinct approaches to painting and sculpture, demonstrating how established artistic languages continue to evolve through contemporary experience.” (Gazelli) @gazelliarthouse @agilabdullayev @memo_akten @derekboshier @paulineboty @brendandawes @jakeelwes @lillyfenichel @kalliopilemos @recycleart #gazelliarthouse #groupexhibition #painting #sculpture #newyorkcity

Tomorrow, Richard Wagner’s ‘Das Rheingold’ arrives on screen in @KirillSerebrennikov’s radical new production, featuring sculptures created by Recycle Group especially for the stage. Premiered at the Salzburg Easter Festival (@osterfestspielesalzburg), the production shifts Wagner’s mythic universe into a post-apocalyptic “post-post” era, where new rituals and cultures rise from the ruins of past civilisations. On 15 August, @arte.tv will broadcast the Felsenreitschule production, with Kirill Petrenko conducting the Berliner Philharmoniker and Christian Gerhaher as Wotan. Recycle Group’s sculptures inhabit this fractured landscape like relics of vanished technologies and ancient symbols, hinting at a civilisation poised on the edge of renewal. Tune in tomorrow to discover Das Rheingold through Serebrennikov’s vision.
