URGENT CALL FOR HELP: LIFESAVING BLOOD DONORS ARE NEEDED ASAP!

Due to lower-than-expected blood donations and higher-than-average utilization of blood products, blood centers across the nation are struggling to keep up with blood product demand. This means we have nothing to import from the mainland at this time! Local hospitals are prioritizing who gets the blood first and who needs to wait.

In Hawaiʻi, aloha means caring for one another—especially when someone needs us most. A blood transfusion can mean the difference between life and loss.

Don’t wait for someone you love to need blood. Someone’s loved one is already in the hospital fighting to see tomorrow. YOU can be the reason someone gets another chance at life.

Schedule your appointment by calling Blood Bank of Hawaii at (808) 848-4770 or visit bbh.org. Walk-ins will be accepted where space allows.

In case you missed it, the American Red Cross declared the second-ever national blood supply CRISIS as donations fail to keep pace with hospital demand during the busy summer trauma season.

What is a blood crisis?

Blood Crisis: Considered an URGENT THREAT. Blood supplies are critically low, putting lifesaving transfusions at risk. Immediate blood donations are urgently needed to get patients the blood they need.
Recovery time: 4 – 8 weeks or longer with steady donor turnout

How is this different from the blood shortages you often hear about from Blood Bank of Hawaii?

Blood Shortage: Considered a WARNING. Blood supplies are lower than needed, but hospitals can usually continue caring for patients while blood centers work to rebuild inventory.
Recovery time: 2 – 4 weeks with steady donor turnout

What does this mean for Hawaii? Everything. With only 2% of Hawaii's population donating blood, our islands often rely on blood donations from the mainland to maintain a safe blood supply. During a national crisis, that support is not always available, which makes local donors more important than ever.

Every blood type is needed. A strong local blood supply ensures hospitals can provide patients with the right blood type while preserving type O blood for emergencies when every second counts.

Go to bbh.org for a listing of Blood Bank of Hawaii blood drives across the state. You can set up a lifesaving appointment on the website or call (808) 848-4770. We look forward to seeing you soon!

In case you haven’t heard, the American Red Cross has declared its second-ever NATIONAL blood supply crisis as donations fail to keep pace with hospital demand during the busy summer trauma season. While you may often hear about blood shortages, a blood supply crisis is much more severe because it means national inventory levels have dropped to less than a day’s supply on the shelves. Blood suppliers must restrict product shipments to hospitals and doctors face difficult choices delaying non-urgent treatments or surgeries.

What does this mean for Hawaii? Everything.

With only 2% of Hawaii's population donating blood, our islands often rely on blood donations from the mainland to maintain a safe blood supply. During a national crisis, that support may not be available, making local donors more important than ever.
