Today we celebrate Boipuso, Botswana’s Independence Day.

Water, particularly rainwater, is especially important to Botswana. Located in the Kalahari Desert, our country experiences frequent droughts and relies on the rain to feed the lands and, in turn, the livestock. It is said that there are more cattle in Botswana than there are people.

Rainwater is so integral to the country that the blue of the Botswana flag (officially adopted on Independence Day) represents water. The country’s motto “pula”, present on the coat of arms, translates as “let there be rain”.

“Pula” is also a common salutation in Botswana, said in place of “cheers”. Today, we extend a warm “pula” to our friends, teams, partners and guests in Botswana 🇧🇼

Although one of the largest owl species in the world, the Pel's Fishing Owl, or Scotopelia peli, is one of the most elusive.

Commonly found near the rivers and lakes of sub-saharan Africa, they are well adapted to their aquatic lifestyle. Minimal feathering on their toes results in drier plumage after fishing and the bottom of their feet are equipped with spiky scales which allows them to hold onto slippery, wet fish.

Just this week, guests at @xigeralodge were treated to this sight of both an adult and it's chick. Field Guide Ike (@ike5138) managed to capture these magnificent pictures.
